Zack Riddle won the 30 lap feature for the Late Models tonight at Madison giving him four wins in five starts this year and 37 all-time victories in the division.
Paul Dygon and Landry Potter brought the eighteen car field to the green flag. Potter jumped out to the early lead with Jake Gille and Jesse Bernhagen up to second and third followed by last week’s Big 8 race winner Will Rece and Brent Edmunds. By lap 5, Riddle, who started eleventh, was up to sixth. A spin on the backstretch brought out the first caution flag on lap 6.
Potter brought the field back to the green before a spin in turn two back in the pack brought out the second caution of the race. Once again Potter led the field back to green in single file. On lap 7 Riddle moved past Edmunds for fifth and a lap later moved up into fourth when he passed Rece. A spin on lap 10 brought out yet another caution.
Following the restart, Riddle moved to the outside of Bernhagen to capture the third spot while Potter had a three car length lead over Gille in front of him. On lap 13 Riddle pulled to the inside of Gille and powered his way past him into second. At the half-way mark it was Potter, Riddle, Gille, Bernhagen, and Weston Marthaler who was making his first start at Madison this season.. A front stretch spin on lap 16 brought out the yellow flag.
Now it was time for the cone and a double file restart. Potter chose the inside with Riddle going to the outside followed by Gille and Bernhagen in row two with Marthaler and Rece in row three. The first restart was waved off. Potter was able to hold off Riddle on the restart but only for two laps as Riddle took the lead on lap 18 followed by Potter and Gille. Marthaler moved into third one lap later but out front Riddle was quickly building up an eight car length lead. On lap 23 Marthaler moved into second by passing Potter with Rece and Edmunds in fourth and fifth but Riddle’s advantage was going to be too much to overcome.
Riddle led the rest of the way to collect the checkered flag followed by Marthaler, Rece, Potter, and Edmunds.
Thanking his crew from victory lane, Riddle said, “This is about all the hard work the team puts in getting this car ready.”
Zack Riddle was fast qualifier with a lap of 18.903 (95.223 mph)
