Coppernoll, Schmidt, and Henze Also Get Wins

Zack Riddle held off Ryan Goldade to win the NASCAR Late Models feature while Rick Coppernoll (MISfitz), Nick Schmidt (Bandits), and Cohen Henze (Bandoleros) were also feature winners on Kids’ Night presented by Bobcat of Janesville.

Zack Riddle Wins Number Five

Zack Riddle won the 30 lap feature for the NASCAR Late Models. It was his fifth feature win this season and the 25th in his Late Model career at Madison. For his efforts, Riddle picked up $1000.

Stephen Scheel and Michael Haggar brought the field to the green flag. Stephen Scheel took the early lead with Shaun Scheel up to second and Wilberg to third after two laps. On lap 4 Wilberg made slight contact with the wall on the backstretch losing two places. On lap 6 Ryan Goldade moved past Shaun Scheel for third while Zack Riddle was up to second behind Stephen Scheel.

On lap 9 Riddle worked his way to the lead with Goldade passing Stephen Scheel one lap later to take the second spot. Riddle and Goldade checked away from the field with Stephen Scheel ten car lengths back in third at the half-way point. With ten laps to go Riddle had increased his lead to six lengths over Goldade. With two laps to go Riddle’s lead was down to three lengths over Goldade, but that was all he needed as Riddle raced his way to victory lane. Stephen Scheel finished third followed by Rusty Hansen and Wilberg.

“Our plan was to run our own race. We were able to hold off the 39 (Goldade) tonight,” said Riddle.

Fast time was established by Rusty Hansen with a lap of 18.805 (95.719 mph). The RA Heating and Air Conditioning Dash was won by Ryan Goldade. Heat race wins went to Stephen Scheel and Riddle.

Rick Coppernoll Back in Victory Lane

Rick Coppernoll won the 20 lap feature for the Dave’s White Rock MISfitz. It was his second feature victory of the season.

Mike Taylor and Rick Coppernoll led the field to the green flag. Coppernoll grabbed the early lead over Taylor. On lap 3 Dan Snyder moved to the outside of Taylor to battle it out for second. One lap later Snyder won the race for second while Ray Hellenbrand and Tom Gille passed Taylor to move into third and fourth. On lap 8 Tom Gille moved to the inside of Ray Hellenbrand to take third and moved to the inside of Snyder one lap later for second. Gille and Snyder continued to battle side by side while Coppernoll maintained a two car length lead out front.

On lap 15 Gille was able to clear Snyder and focused his attention on Coppernoll. With two laps to go he had cut the lead to half a car length, but Coppernoll was able to keep the lead and pick up the win. Ray Hellenbrand was placed second after Gille “broke out” on the final lap.

“The competition is getting stiff out here,” said Coppernoll.

Ray Hellenbrand set quick time with a lap of 20.059 (89.735 mph). Tim Wondrash won the RA Heating and Air Conditioning Dash. The heat race was won by Rick Coppernoll with a .006 second advantage over Ray Hellenbrand.

Nick Schmidt Does it Again

For the sixth time in seven starts, Nick Schmidt won the 20 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Bandits. Schmidt now has 22 career Bandit feature wins at Madison which puts him just two behind the all-time leader Chester Ace.

Kevin Beyer and Ronnie Osborne had the honors of bringing the Bandits to the green flag. Osborne had a slight lead after one lap before surrendering the top spot to Bart Brockmann. Nick Newton was up to second on lap 3 with Nick Schmidt in third. On lap 5 Schmidt moved to the outside of Newton to take second. On lap 7 Schmidt pulled up along the outside of Brockmann, but he wasn’t able to make the pass. With ten laps to go Schmidt got to the inside of Brockmann who forced him down into the grass coming out of turn four. On lap 11 Schmidt was able to find the necessary room to make the pass and take the lead.

From there it was smooth sailing for Schmidt who cruised to victory lane. Brockmann finished second followed by Newton, Osborne, and Trent Rueth.

“I was trying to do whatever I could to get to the front. I’ll just keep doing the best I can do,” said Schmidt.

Nick Schmidt was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 15.033 (59.868 mph). Bart Brockmann won the RA Heating and Air Conditioning Dash and the heat race.

A Clean Sweep for Cohen Henze

Cohen Henze won the 15 lap feature for the Taylored Construction Bandoleros and picked up a clean sweep for the night. In addition, he established a new track record in qualifying. It was Henze’s second win in two starts at Madison this year.

After three attempts for the field of fifteen cars to complete a lap, Easton Riedner paced the field back to green but lost power allowing Cohen Henze to bolt to the front after one lap with Penn Sauter passing Parker Searles for second. A spin on lap 4 brought out the caution and set up a single-file restart. Henze and Sauter regained their advantage over the field with Searles, Collin Murphy, and Lincoln Cain in pursuit. Henze and Sauter quickly found themselves working their way around lapped traffic with Sauter able to take the lead on lap 8. On lap 10 the caution flag waved when two cars slowed on the track.

Henze found room to the inside of Sauter on the restart to take the lead, but Sauter worked his way back to the front with five laps to go. With four laps to go the two leaders were side by side before the caution flag waved for a spin back in the pack.

When the green flag waved it was Henze and Sauter fighting it out for the lead with Cain joining the mix. Henze was able to hold on to pick up the win with Sauter and Cain finishing in second and third with Parker Searles and Bentley Thompson rounding out the top five.

Henze set a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 14.675 (61.329 mph). Heat races were won by Riley Smith and Henze.

Racing continues on Friday, July 15th for Mid-Season Championship Night featuring double features in the NASCAR Late Models, Dave’s White Rock MISfitz, Pellitteri Waste Systems Bandits, and the HSRA. Late Model features will each pay $1000 to win thanks to Pit Pay Pit Pass App and Dave’s White Rock. Pit gates open at 3:30, practice at 5:00, qualifying at 6:15 with first race at 7:30.
