Oregon, WI- Round number one of the Super Late Model Triple Crown at Madison International Speedway is shaping up to be a ‘can’t miss’ event this Friday night, June 1. Twenty expected entries are listed thus far, made up of former Triple Crown Champions, Track Champions, Joe Shear Classic Winners, NASCAR Champions and Challengers. The Super Late Models will contest a 50 lap feature event and will be joined by the Midwest Trucks, Central States Super Cups and Roto Rooter 6shooters.
Pit gates will open Friday June 1 at 2:30pm, practice begins at 4pm, spectator gates open at 6pm, qualifying gets underway at 6:15pm and the first race starts at 7:30pm. Adult General Admission tickets are $18, Whelen Heroes and Seniors $16, students ages 12-17 are $10, kids ages 6-11 $5 with children ages 5 and under admitted FREE. Expected Entries at a Glance:
Casey Johnson- The two time Super Late Model Triple Crown Champion is one of the toughest competitors in the state, he returns to ‘Wisconsin’s Fastest Half Mile’ where he is always tough. Johnson appeared to be on his way to a $10,000 in May during the Joe Shear Classic before mechanical woes ended his day just shy of the checkered flag.
Jeff Holmgren, Jr- Just last Saturday many took notice of this East Troy, WI pilot as he fought for the lead and led early in the ‘Salute the Troops 100’ ARCA Midwest Tour event at Jefferson Speedway. Holmgren and his team are starting to get their Fury Racecar dialed in, including former MIS Modified Champion Wayne Freimund.
John Beale- Beale collected the most weekly NASCAR Late Model wins at Madison in 2016, just a year after his Rookie of the Year season. His familiar 5b car has visited victory lane four times in weekly competition here, he has led in Super Late Model competition as well, where he looks to add to win in his fourth division here, Bandits, Trucks and Late Models.
Johnny Sauter- Anyone that was at the Joe Shear Classic this May knows that Johnny Sauter had a fast race car, as a matter of fact the last Triple Crown event he competed in, The Howie Lettow Memorial, the 2016 NASCAR Truck Champion looked to be on his way to the win before an electrical issue hindered his efforts. He won the 2015 Joe Shear Classic and has been winning just about everything so far this season in his NASCAR Truck.
Paul Shafer, Jr- Could this be the year that all the pieces fall in place for Paul Shafer, Jr. He has been a threat to win during Triple Crown events the last three seasons and he finally visited MIS victory lane last August. He is the 2013 Illiana Motor Speedway Champion in his home state of Indiana and is the most recent first time winner in ARCA Midwest Tour competition, where he is the current point leader.
Andy Monday- One of the more popular drivers in the state, Monday had to eventually bow out of Triple Crown action last season to concentrate his efforts on the Thursday Night Thunder, Fox River Racing Club points battle at Wisconsin International Raceway. His efforts paid off, as Monday captured his first Super Late Model title in 2017 at WIR.
Austin Nason- He is a former winner in Super Late Model Triple Crown competition, but now he will forever be in the record books at the 2017 Joe Shear Classic Winner. A nice $10,000 payday awaited the new Dad in May at MIS. Now he and his team return to Oregon and they have been on a roll, and more importantly, fast everyone they have gone.
Dean LaPointe- The family team has had their share of ups and downs when making the voyage from Marshfield to compete in Triple Crown and Midwest Tour action at MIS. LaPointe has been fast and has recorded heat race wins, but a solid feature finish has eluded this veteran driver here. Returning after an engine mishap in his Super Late and a broken radiator in his hauler, he is looking for a change of fortune.
Jake Finney- The jump up to Super Late Models continues for the second generation driver. Finney found much success on the Mid-American Stock Car Series, winning multiple times on the ultra competitive Sportsman Series before jumping into Late Models. A new car and a new power plant await the Illinois driver.
Travis Dassow- After a full season on the Midwest Tour, Dassow is taking some time off this year, but luckily for the MIS faithful, the Triple Crown dates are circled on his calendar. Dassow is the 2007 ASA Late Model Series Champion and dabbled in the NASCAR Truck ranks before returning to the Midwest where he finds himself near the front of the field on a consistent basis.
Mike Meyerhofer- One of the few Super Late Model teams to take advantage of mid-May testing at MIS, Meyerhofer and his sleak #37 machine took a liking to the high banks right away. A semi-regular competitor at Slinger Super Speedway, Meyerhofer has some ‘behind the scenes’ help from some pretty fast drivers for when he returns to Madison.
Curt Tillman- Over the years, Curt Tillman has put his name on the finishing order of some of the biggest Super Late Model races across the region. He and his team have a new ride and a new engine ready for competition in the Midwest in 2018 and have added the Triple Crown to their busy schedule, which has included Slinger, Grundy and Midwest Tour stops at Madison and Jefferson thus far.
Jeff VanOudenhoven- He is a five time Fox River Racing Club Champion, a three time Red, White and Blue State Champion and a MARS Super Late Model Series Champion. Don’t let all of those stats fool you though, VanOudenhoven is a three time Super Late Model winner at MIS and he has all of the elements in place to return to victory lane this Friday night.
Rich Bickle, Jr- He recorded his 18th career Super Late Model win at Madison last July in the middle round of the Triple Crown, much to the delight of the grandstands. The former ARTGO, ASA and NASCAR standout was a back to back Champion (85-86) at what was then referred to as Capital Super Speedway, now MIS. The three time Snowball Derby Champion sits ninth in all-time MIS Super Late triumphs.
Brad Keith- A familiar name to many in the Midwest, the 2013 Mid-American Stock Car Series Champion has really gotten his Super Late Model running well. Last July saw Keith finish fifth in a hard fought Slinger Nationals, his best career National finish. This will be his first Super Late Model Triple Crown attempt.
Keith Tolf- This former Lake Geneva Raceway competitor has bounced around since his home track’s closure following the 2006 season. Tolf has been seen in Big 8 Series action, Super Lates at Illiana, Dells, Slinger and elsewhere. He is now preparing to return to action at Madison for Round One of the Super Late Model Triple Crown.
Jake Carpenter- Making his first visit to Super Late Model action at ‘Wisconsin’s Fastest Half Mile’, Carpenter hopes to capitalize on the success he has found at WIR on Thursday nights. The former Latte Model standout jumped behind the wheel of the Scott Hansen look-a-like Super Late Model in 2016 and is now ready to do some traveling around the Badger state.
Chris Weinkauf- The 2009 State Park Speedway Champion, Dick Trickle 99 Winner and 2017 WCS Champion will be making his first appearance at the Super Late Model Triple Crown. His bright pink Chevrolet was in the mix during May’s Joe Shear Classic before being sidelined late in the running after being in the top five all day. Weinkauf looks to return with speed in hand this Friday night.
Jason Weinkauf- He was a force to be reckoned with in May, perhaps one of the three strongest cars during the Joe Shear Classic. He led twice during the 200 lap contest, going wheel to wheel on the high side with Bubba Pollard for a multitude of laps. The former Marshfield Motor Speedway Champion is gunning for the Triple Crown title.
Ryan Farrell- Farrell has turned heads in the early stages of 2018. A solid run at Golden Sands brought Farrell into May’s Joe Shear Classic on a high note, but that momentum quickly vanished with mechanical issues during practice. Farrell and his team regrouped, getting the car back together and putting together a strong showing during ARCA Midwest Tour action last Saturday, leading a good portion of the 100 Jefferson event.
