Six Drivers Capture the Cheese at Madison

Story Image

The fourth annual Cheese Curd Cup presented by Culver’s of Oregon saw six different drivers take home wins in exciting action on the “Ring of Fire” quarter mile. Davey Pennel (Midwest Dash), Waylon Robinson (Tim’s Detailing Hobby Stocks), Josh Morris (Roto Rooter 6Shooters), Kyle Riedner (Bandits), Axel Oldenhoff (Tim’s Detailing Bandoleros), and Lincoln Cain (Legends) all went home with checkered flags. Additionally, new track records were established by Robinson (Hobby Stocks) and Wesley Baumeister (Bandoleros).

Davey Pennel Dominates the Dash Field

Davey Pennel ran away from the field to pick up the win in the 30 lap feature for the Midwest Dash Series presented by Morrison’s Auto Parts. Two weeks ago Pennel won the 300 lap ISS Enduro driving a different car.

Tim Higgins and Justin Pearson brought the field to the green flag. Higgins took the early lead before a stalled car brought out the caution on lap 2. Higgins led for another lap before Phil Malouf took the lead followed by Pearson and Karter Stark. On lap 5 Stark was up to second with Davey Pennel following him through in third. Karter Stark took the lead one lap later with Pennel moving up to second and taking the lead on lap 8. Pennel wasted no time opening up a six car length lead after ten laps.

On lap 13, Pennel had caught the tail end of the field and started working his way through the field. At the half-way point Pennel’s lead over Stark was nearly three seconds. It appeared that for Stark and the rest of the field all they could hope for was a caution flag as Pennel was making it look easy out front. The race stay green as Pennel cruised to victory lane with an almost seven second advantage.

Stark finished second followed by Malouf, Pearson, and Shane Bowar.

“We really figured this car out and had a pretty dominant performance,” said Pennel.

Pennel was fast qualifier with a lap 13.996 (64.304 mph). The three eight lap heat races were won by Steve Dickson, Malouf, and Kyle Stark.

Josh Morris Wins His Third at Madison

Josh Morris led wire to wire on his way the checkered flag in the 18 lap feature for the Roto Rooter 6Shooters in a points race. It was his third win of the season and fifth in his 6Shooter career at Madison.

Morris and Caleb Richards led the seventeen car field to the green flag. Morris took the lead over Richards with rookie Nolan McNallie in third and Jason Van Hise in fourth. On lap 4 Van Hise moved to the outside of Richards to take the third position and then passed McNallie to move into second but still ten car lengths behind Morris.

Morris did a great job working through lapped traffic with Dylan Klinger up to challenge Van Hise for second. With five laps to go Van Hise was cutting into Morris’ lead but time was running out. But Morris was able to hold off Van Hise for the win with Trevor Chilson finishing in third followed by Klinger and McNallie.

When asked how much money he had in his car, Morris noted, “This is my uncle’s car I’m driving tonight.”

Jason Van Hise and Ken Morris picked up the wins in the 6 lap heat races.

Dylan Klinger has an 831-751 points lead over Trevor Chilson going into next Friday’s double features. Randy Grancorvitz, Kenny Morris, and Gene Robbins complete the top five.

Waylon Robinson Loves the Ring of Fire

For the second time in 2024, Waylon Robinson won the 25 lap feature for the Tim’s Detailing Hobby Stocks. That’s quite an accomplishment for the young driver entering his sophomore year of high school later this month.

Jacob Mathison and Braeden Yelland led the field to the green flag. Mathison took the point followed by Yelland and Jessica Breunig. On lap 4 Tony Ciano worked past Breunig to take the third spot and then race by Yelland for second. On lap 7 Mathison’s lead was up to six car lengths over Ciano and Scott Riedner.

At the half-way mark the best battle was between Shane Strothman and Riedner with Strothman taking the third spot with Waylon Robinson passing Strothman on lap 14. With ten laps to go Mathison’s lead was disappearing as Ciano was on his rear bumper followed by Robinson.

With seven laps to go things took a dramatic turn up front as the cars of Ciano and Charles Vian made contact with Ciano spinning and the caution flag coming out. Both cars went to the back of the field.

Mathison and Robinson led the field back to the green with Robinson taking the lead with five laps to go. With two laps to go Riedner moved into second shortly before the caution flag waved when two cars got together ending the night for Strothman.

Robinson chose the inside with Riedner on the outside followed by Breunig and Vian. Robinson kept his lead and held off Riedner to pick up the win with Vian, Breunig, and Ciano rounding out the top five.

“This car is absolutely phenomenal this year. The car was great all day. Wish we could race here more often,” said Robinson from victory lane.

Robinson broke his own track record with a lap of 13.926 (64.627 mph). Jacob Mathison and Jessica Breunig were the 8 lap heat winners

Kyle Riedner Edges Ryan Oetzel in a Bandits Thriller

Kyle Riedner saved his best for last as he won by less than a foot to take home the checkered flag in the 20 lap Bandits feature. He was the only Cheese Curd Cup repeat winner from last year when he won the Midwest Dash race.

Caden Pankow and Ryan Oetzel had the honors of bringing the Bandits field to the green flag. Oetzel took the early lead with Nick Newton in second followed by Dean Pennel. Newton was on the rear bumper of Oetzel as they started to distance themselves from the field after five laps. On lap 9 Kyle Riedner was up to third with Nick Schmidt to fourth one lap later.

Riedner passed Newton for second on lap 11, but Newton was about to give up the spot as the two raced side by side with Schmidt on the outside looking in. Riedner was able to get the third spot on lap 15 with Newton and Schmidt side by side for third.

It all came down to the final lap as somehow Riedner found the room to get by Oetzel to pick up the win. Oetzel finished second followed by Newton, Schmidt, and Pennel.

“I don’t know. This is the best. I love this track,” said Riedner, who began racing the Ring of Fire when it was installed in 2006 and now has six career Bandit wins at Madison.

Fast qualifier was Nick Schmidt with a trip of 15.160 (59.367 mph). Ryan Oetzel and Craig Wilcott picked up wins in the 8 lap heat races.

Lincoln Cain Best of the Legends

After setting fast time earlier in the night, Lincoln Cain won the 20 lap feature for the Legends picking up his first win in the division at Madison. It was Cain’s first Legends win at Madison.

Kyle Mitchell and Ethan Ross brought the twelve Legends cars to the green flag with Ross leading the first lap before Mitchell moved back to the point. Ross took back the lead on lap 5 with Jacob Stark and Lincoln Cain moving up to second and third. A spin on lap 7 brought out the caution flag.

Ross paced the field back to the green flag with Cain racing his way to second on lap 9 and took the lead getting to the inside of Ross for the lead on lap 10 before a spin brought out the second caution of the race.

For the restart, Cain and Ross chose the front row followed by Stark and Niemi in the second row. Cain broke away from the field with Stark, Ryan Laatsch, and Niemi racing for second. Stark took second followed by Laatsch, Niemi and Ross. But nobody was fast enough to catch Cain as he picked up the checkered flag winning by 1.6 seconds over Stark. Laatsch, Niemi, and Ross completed the top five.

From victory lane Cain thanked those who helped him accomplish his win.

Cain was fastest qualifier with a lap of 13.759 (65.412 mph). Winners in the 8 lap heat races were Ethan Ross and Eric Niemi.

Axel Oldenhoff Holds Off His Brother for Bandoleros Win

Axel Oldenhoff held off his brother, Ace, to win the 15 lap feature for the Tim’s Detailing Bandoleros feature. It was his second career feature win at Madison.

Trevor Lami and Jase Riedner paced the field of eleven Bandoleros to the green flag. An incident on the opening lap involving three cars brought out the red flag and ending the night for two of the drivers.

On the restart the Oldenhoff boys jumped out front and started to run away from the field. Gage Kubicz moved up to third. Axel Oldenhoff kept the lead over his brother Ace and then both began working their way through lapped traffic before the yellow flag waved for a spin on lap 9. Axel continued to lead over Ace with Gage Kubicz and Jase Riedner in third and fourth.

But in the end the checkered flag belonged to Axel who beat out his brother with Kubicz, Riedner, and Lami completing the top five.

Ten year old Wesley Baumeister set a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 14.284 (59.367 mph) which is a new track record. LJ Robinson and Axel Oldenhoff won the 8 lap heat races.
