Scheel Holds Off Riddle for Late Model Checkered Flag

Shaun Scheel didn’t have much luck at Madison last week. But that all changed tonight when he held off Zack Riddle to pick up the checkered flag in the 30 lap Late Model main event. For Scheel it was his first win of the season and fourth overall in his Late Model career at Madison.

Jayden Dahlberg and Mathew Fairburn Jr. paced the field of seventeen Late Models to the green flag. Dahlberg took the lead for the first three laps before Jesse Bernhagen passed him to take the point. Landry Potter, Jacob Gille, and Ryan Goldade followed Bernhagen to the front of the field. A lap 7 spin in turn two brought out the first caution.

Bernhagen brought the field back to the green flag in the single file restart and continued to show the way out front. On lap 9, fast qualifier Shaun Scheel, who started eleventh, moved into the top with Zack Riddle behind him in sixth. On lap 13 Jacob Gille pulled to the inside of Potter to battle for second just as Scheel and Riddle were breaking into the top five. As Gille and Potter were racing side by side it allowed Bernhagen to build a double digit lead over the field.

The last thing Bernhagen wanted to see was a caution, but that’s exactly what heppened on lap 18 for a spin in turn two thus bringing out the cone and a double file restart. Bernhagen chose the inside as did Scheel, Gille, and Riddle. Potter elected to start on the outside of Bernhagen in the front row with Will Rece behind Potter. Potter was able to jump out to the lead with Rece and Scheel fighting it out for second. The lead for Potter grew to five car lengths over Scheel who took second from Rece on lap 23.

With five laps to go Scheel was closing quickly on Potter before the caution flag waved for a front stretch incident behind the leaders.

Now it was time for the cone and a double file restart. Potter chose low, Scheel chose the outside of the front row. Rece and Riddle selected the second row with Goldade and Gille in the third row. Scheel vaulted out to the lead followed by Riddle, Potter, and Rece. Scheel and Riddle quickly checked away from the pack with Scheel holding a one car length lead with one lap to go. But Scheel wasn’t about to be denied his ticket to victory lane as he held off Riddle to pick up his first feature win of the season. Bobby Wilberg, Gille, and Ryan Goldade rounded out the top five.

“I had to make some big moves during the race. This car was just unreal tonight,” said Scheel who took the time to thank everyone who made his win possible.

Scheel set fast time with a lap of 18.897 (95.253 mph). Jesse Bernhagen and Stephen Scheel won the 8 lap heat races.

Mason Hellenbrand Back In Victory Lane

Mason Hellenbrand held off Evan Leahy to win the 20 lap feature for the Dave’s White Rock MISfitz and in doing so picked up his second win of the 2024 season. It was Hellenbrand’s eighth career win in the division putting him second in all-time wins.

Hellenbrand and Evan Leahy, who was making his first-ever start at Madison, led the field to the green flag. Hellenbrand quickly jumped out to the lead followed by Leahy, Kenny Storkson, and Chris Wangrow. By lap 7, Hellenbrand, Leahy, and Storkson had put some distance between themselves and the fourth place car.

On lap 11 Storkson pulled to the outside of Leahy for the second spot which allowed Hellenbrand to open up a three car length advantage out front. On lap 14 Storkson took the second position from Leahy shortly before two cars got together back in the pack to bring out the caution flag.

The double file restart with six laps to go found Hellenbrand and Leahy in the front row with Storkson and Wangrow in the second row. Hellenbrand had a slight advantage on the inside over Leahy on his outside. Hellenbrand was able to maintain his lead the rest of the way followed by Leahy, Storkson, Wangrow, and Dan Snyder.

“It feels pretty good,” said Hellenbrand who broke out on the second lap and avoided another breakout the rest of the way.

Fast qualifier was Kenny Storkson with a trip of 20.026 (89.883 mph). Heat winners were Mason Hellenbrand and Chris Wangrow.

There will be no racing at Madison the next two Friday nights.

The next event at Madison will be the July edition of the One on One Street Drags coming up on Thursday, July 11th.
