Dave Edwards, Steve Dickson, and Alex Hartwig Also Winners

It was a picture perfect night of racing at Madison with a great crowd on hand to see Shaun Scheel hold off the NASCAR Late Model field to pick up his first win of the season while Dave Edwards (MISfitz), Steve Dickson (Bandits), and Alex Hartwig (Bandoleros) were also winners at part of Union 464 Kids’ Night.

Over $4,000 worth of new bikes were presented to young fans and many of those youngsters also participated in the bicycle, big wheel, and power wheel races during intermission. The management of Madison International Speedway would like to thank all of the sponsors and race teams who donated bikes to make this great event possible.

Shaun Scheel Picks Up Late Model Victory

Shaun Scheel won the 30 lap feature for the NASCAR Late Models. It was his first feature win of the season as he became the seventh different driver in eight races to take home a checkered flag.

Scheel and Rusty Hansen paced the very competitive field of NASCAR Late Models to the green flag. Shaun Scheel took the early lead, but the caution flag came out on the second lap when the car of Stephen Scheel made heavy contact with the wall in turn one.

Scheel brought the field back to the green flag followed by Zack Riddle and John Baumeister Jr. As the race progressed Scheel continued to lead with Riddle on his back bumper with Baumeister Jr. close behind as the top six broke away from the pack. A heated battle between Dale Nottestad and Bobby Wilberg was taking place for fourth just before the caution flag came out for debris on the track on lap 8.

Scheel and Riddle separated themselves from the third place car of Baumeister Jr. on the restart. On lap 12 Nick Panitzke worked his way to the inside of Wilberg to take fifth while Nottestad was working on Baumeister Jr. for third. A spin on the backstretch brought out the third caution flag of the evening on lap 13. Scheel was able to build a two car length lead over Riddle on the restart. On lap 16 Panitzke moved to the inside of Nottestad to take fourth with Wilberg up to challenge Nottestad for fifth. On lap 18 Wilberg moved into fourth while Scheel was opening up a four car length lead over Riddle out front.

With tight races going on behind him, Scheel continued to show the way out front and with two laps to go had increased his lead to eight car lengths. In the end it was all Scheel who held off Riddle who had cut his deficit to four car lengths while Baumeister Jr., Panitzke, and Nottestad rounded out the top five.

“It was a rough start here this year, but we’re finally getting it figured out at the right time,” said Scheel.

Bobby Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 18.563 (96.967 mph) and also won the Dash. Zack Riddle and Dale Nottestad were heat winners.

Dave Edwards Holds Off Ray Hellenbrand for Exciting MISfitz Win

Point leader Dave Edwards picked up his second win of the season in the 20 lap feature for the Dave’s White Rock MISfitz.

Tim Wondrash and Bryan Hellenbrand brought the field of Dave’s White Rock MISfitz to the green flag in their 20 lap feature. Bryan Hellenbrand took the point with Mike Taylor up to second on lap 2. One lap later Dave Edwards was up to third and moved to the outside of Taylor to take second on lap 4 shortly before a spin in turn four brought out the caution flag.

Bryan Hellenbrand brought the field back to the green flag with Edwards on the outside of him. On lap 6 Edwards took the lead by a nose and increased it to a car length over Bryan Hellenbrand and Ray Hellenbrand who were racing side by side for second.

At the half-way mark Edwards’ lead was two car lengths over Ray Hellenbrand. On lap 12 Ray Hellenbrand was on the back bumper of Edwards as both drivers were flirting with the twenty second mark. With five laps to go Edwards’ lead was down to half a car length. With two laps to go Ray Hellenbrand looked to the inside of Edwards coming out of turn two but was unable to make the pass. On the final lap, Ray Hellenbrand made his move coming out of turn four and worked to the inside of Edwards, but was unable to make the pass and Edwards picked up the win. Bryan Hellenbrand finished in third followed by Mike Taylor and Gary Hellenbrand.

“That was our plan. Stick to the high groove and not break out,” said Edwards in a post race interview with track announcer Matt Vaade.

Dave Edwards was fast qualifier with a lap of 20.335 (88.517 mph) and also won the Dash for the fourth straight time. Bryan Hellenbrand won the heat race.

Steve Dickson Best of the Bandits

Steve Dickson won the 25 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Bandits. It was his second win of the season and his sixteenth career win at Madison.

Brandon Junget and Steve Dickson paced the field to the green flag. Junget jumped out to the early lead with Dickson fighting back on the inside to take the lead on lap 3. After ten laps Dickson had built his lead to three car lengths over Junget with Ronnie Osborn two car lengths out of second place.

On lap 14 Dickson had caught the tail end of the field allowing Junget and Osborne to gain some ground. On lap 19 Junget had cut the lead to less than a car length and was looking to the inside of Dickson. Dickson held his ground on the inside with Junget on his rear bumper, but Dickson was not to be denied tonight as he picked up the win.

“It’s about time, “said Dickson who was happy to be back in victory lane.

Fast time in qualifying belonged to Nick Schmidt with a lap of 14.716 (61.158 mph). Schmidt also won the Dash. Heat winners were Schmidt and Steve Dickson.

Alex Hartwig Back in Victory Lane at Madison

For the third time in four races this season, Alex Hartwig raced his way to victory lane in the 15 lap race for the Bandoleros. As a result of his win, Hartwig becomes the winningest all-time Bandolero driver at Madison with five career checkered flags.

The Wangsness brothers, Kaeden and Chase, brought the sixteen car field to the green flag. Kaeden Wangsness took the early lead before Anna Malouf claimed the top spot after the first lap. But from his eighth starting position, Alex Hartwig was quickly up to challenge and moved to the top of the leader board on lap 3. He quickly built up a fifteen car length lead as Malouf, Tucker Bodendorfer, Karter Stark and Michael Guderski were battling it out for second before a spin in turn two on lap 7 brought out the caution.

Hartwig continued to lead when the race went green with Stark and Guderski in second and third. With a solid lead, Hartwig was able to work his way through and around lapped traffic on his way to the green flag. Stark, Guderski, Tucker Bodendorfer, and Laney Osborne completed the top five.

“I want to thank my dad for working on the car and all of my sponsors,” said Hartwig.

Hartwig was fast qualifier with a lap of 14.758. Heat winners were Chase Wangsness and Tucker Bodendorfer.
