Shaun Scheel and Robert Hansberry Jr. Big Winners at Madison

Story Image

Shaun Scheel took home the checkered flag for the NASCAR Late Models with Robert Hansberry Jr. taking top honors in the Dave’s White Rock Sportsman in Round One of the Racing for Autism Badgerland Challenge at Madison International Speedway. Dave Schmidt (Bandits), Brandon Angilieri (Hobby Stocks), and Brandon DeLacy (Midwest Compacts) also picked up wins.

Shaun Scheel Shows the Way to Victory Lane

Shaun Scheel won the 30 lap feature for the NASCAR Late Models

John Baumeister Jr. and Shaun Scheel brought the eighteen car field to the green flag and proceeded to race side by side for the lead for the first five laps before the caution flag waved when Brian Beale made contact with the car of Dale Nottestad resulting in both cars going to the back of the field.

Scheel led following the restart as Baumeister Jr. chose to line up behind him with Will Rece lining up on the outside of row one. Scheel jumped out to a three car length lead over Rece with Baumeister Jr., Zack Riddle, and Jeremy Miller completing the top five.

On lap 11 Riddle worked his way to the inside of Baumeister Jr. coming out of turn three to move up to the third position with Miller doing the same one lap later. On lap 14 the cars of Beale and Matt Lundberg got together bringing out the race’s second caution flag. Lundberg was able to continue while Beale needed a tow to the pits.

For the restart Scheel chose the inside with Rece lining up behind him and Riddle electing to go to the outside next to Scheel. Scheel maintained his lead followed by Rece, Riddle, Baumeister Jr., and Miller. Brent Edmunds fought his way past Miller for the fifth spot on lap 17.

With ten laps to go Scheel still had a six car length lead over Rece who had a single car advantage over Riddle. As it appeared that Scheel had smooth sailing to victory lane, a spin on the front shoot back in the pack brought out the caution flag with four laps to go.

The drama continued as Scheel lined up on the inside with Riddle taking the high side for the restart. Scheel quickly jumped back out to the lead while the others were fighting it out behind him. Scheel was more than happy to let the others battle it out behind him as he rolled his way to victory lane. Rece finished second followed by Baumeister Jr., Riddle, and Miller.

Jeremy Miller set fast time with a lap of 18.569 (96.936 mph). Jon Reynolds Jr. won the Dash Series race. Heat winners were John Baumeister Jr. and Shaun Scheel.

Robert Hansberry Jr. Picks Up the Clean Sweep in the Sportsman

It was a clean sweep for Robert Hansberry Jr. in the Dave’s White Rock Sportsman tonight as he set fast time, won the dash, heat, and feature.

Ray Hellenbrand and Terry Wangsness paced the field to the green flag in their 20 lap feature. Wangsness moved out to the early lead before the cars of Gary Hellenbrand, Jason Thoma, and Jake Biever got together coming out of turn one bringing out the caution flag. Hellenbrand and Thoma were able to continue.

Wangness was able to regain the lead after the restart, but Hansberry Jr. was quickly up to challenge and took the lead on lap 3 just before the caution flag came out for a spin in turn two. Hansberry Jr. easily regained the lead when the green flag waved again and opened up a five car length advantage over Wangsness. Mike Taylor, Ray Hellenbrand, and Jason Thoma were running third through fifth. Thoma moved past Hellenbrand and into fourth on lap 8.

Hansberry Jr.’s lead out front had increased to 1.5 seconds by the half-way mark. Thoma claimed the third spot on lap 13 when he worked to the inside of Taylor as the field was now hoping for a caution to slow down the speedy Hansberry Jr.

The best race was taking place behind the leader where Thoma was battling it out with Wangsness and took the second position with two laps to go. But this race belonged to Hansberry Jr. who picked up the win. Thoma, Wangsness, Taylor, and Ray Hellenbrand rounded out the top five.

Robert Hansberry Jr. was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 19.834 (90.753 mph). Hansberry was also victorious in the Dash Series. Heat races were won by Sam Messell and Hansberry Jr.

Dave Schmidt Runs Away from the Bandits

Dave Schmidt won the 25 lap feature for the Pellitteri Waste Systems Bandits.

Cade Watters led the field to the green flag with Ronnie Osborne flanking him to his right. Watters led the first five laps before a backstretch spin brought out the caution flag. Watters was only able to lead one more lap before Dave Schmidt and Steve Dickson sped past him for the lead.

Schmidt wasted no time in building up a huge lead with Dickson in second but nearly three seconds down. The only thing the field could hope for was the caution flag to come out as it appeared nobody would catch the leader. But the yellow did wave with two laps to go when Lyle Phillips’ car stalled on the front shoot.

This gave the rest of the cars on the lead lap a fighting chance. But Schmidt was able to regain his momentum and lead the next pair of laps before the caution flag came out again for a spin. It was the same result as Schmidt ran away from the field to pick up the win. Dickson was able to hold off McKayla Adams and Nick Schmidt for second.

Dave Schmidt was quickest in qualifying with a mark of 14.769. He also won the six lap Dash Series race. Heat races were won by Ben Rucker and Steve Dickson.

Brandon Angilieri Tops the Hobby Stocks

Brandon Angilieri won the 25 lap Hobby Stocks feature on the Ring of Fire.

Jay Bozart and Chuck Egli brought the big cars to the green flag in their 25 lap feature with Egli leading the first two laps before Dustin Ward took away the top spot. The caution flag came out for a spin on lap 3.

Brandon Angilieri took the lead from Ward on lap 5 with Brandon Riedner up to the third as the top three broke away from the pack. Angilieri continued to lead with Riedner and Ward doing everything they could do to catch him.

On lap 6 the caution flag came out for a spin in turn four involving Korey Bengsch and Jon Benninger.

On the restart, Angilieri chose the inside with Rieder moving to the outside with Ward and Dan Snyder in the second row. Angilieri and Riedner made contact going into turn one with Angilieri able to keep the lead with Ward up to second ahead of Riedner. Jim Tate Jr. took fourth with Snyder finishing in the fifth spot.

Dan Snyder broke his track record from last year with a lap 14.159. Ricky Sanwick and Scott Riedner won the heat races.

Brandon DeLacy Cruises to Victory Lane in Midwest Compacts

Brandon DeLacy won the 20 lap feature for the Midwest Compact Touring Series.

Aaron Donovan and Merek Pankow brought the nine car field to the green flag. Pankow grabbed the early lead while his fellow competitors were racing two and three wide behind him. On lap 3 Phil Malouf raced his way past Pankow, but he was quickly joined by Brandon DeLacy who moved to the inside and made the pass on lap 4 while coming out of turn two.

DeLacy quickly opened up a six car length lead over Malouf with Gary Stark Jr. a couple of lengths behind Malouf. At the half-way mark DeLacy was increasing his lead while Malouf and Stark Jr. were putting on a good show for the second spot. On lap 13 Stark Jr. pulled inside of Malouf as the two raced side by side with Stark Jr. getting the advantage one lap later.

Out front DeLacy was cruising his way around the half-mile and easily picked up the win by more than five seconds over Stark Jr.

Former Madison Bandit champion Brandon DeLacy was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 21.823 (82.482 mph). Gary Stark Jr. won the 8 lap heat race.

Racing continues at Madison International Speedway next Friday night (June1st) when it will be Round One of the Super Late Model Triple Crown Challenge. Joining the racing program will be the Midwest Truck Series, Roto Rooter 6Shooters, and Central States Region Super Cups. Grandstands open at 6:00 with qualifying at 6:15 and racing at 7:30.
