Oregon, WI (August 11, 2023) It was the 3rd annual Cheese Curd Cup presented by Culver’s of Oregon with seven divisions and over one hundred cars taking to the famed “Ring of Fire” quarter mile. As storms were moving towards the track from the northwest, the entire program was completed and by the end of the night Kyle Riedner (Midwest Dash), Jarrod Sutherland (Hobby Stocks), Nick Schmidt (Bandits), Brandon DeLacy (Area Sportsman), Ben Massman (Legends Direct Legends), Axel Oldenhoff (Legends Direct Bandoleros), and Ken Morris (Roto Rooter 6Shooters) all took home checkered flags. Madison International Speedway would like to thank Tim Gladem (Tim’s Detailing), Will Rece (Rece Electric, LLC), Legends Direct, Wisconsin Cheese Shop and Culver’s of Oregon for making the Cheese Curd Cup another successful event.
Kyle Riedner Best of the Midwest Dash
It was back in 2006 when the “Ring of Fire” was created at Madison and Kyle Riedner was there competing in the Bandits. Fast forward seventeen years where he found himself back in victory lane after winning the twenty-five lap feature for the Midwest Dash Series.
Dan Braun and Phil Malouf brought the field to the green flag with Malouf taking the point followed by Braun, Al Strobel III, Adam Hayden, and Kyle Riedner. Riedner was on the move has he passed both Hayden and Strobel III to take third on lap 5. A spin in turn four on lap 7 brought out the caution flag.
Malouf paced the field back to the green flag as Riedner passed Braun for second with Karter Stark working the outside to move up to fourth. On lap 9 Riedner moved to the inside of Malouf coming out of turn four to take the lead. On lap 11, Stark moved by Braun to take third. Two laps later Stark overtook Malouf for second shortly before the caution came out for a stalled car in turn one.
The cone came out for the restart with Riedner and Stark making up the front row followed by Tyler Deshaine and Malouf in the second row. Riedner, Stark, and Deschaine jumped back out front with Riedner holding a half car length advantage of over Stark with Deschaine on the outside looking inside. But not to be outdone was Mark English who quickly moved up to hunt down the top three. With five laps to go a pile up coming out of turn three brought out the caution flag which eventually turned to red due to the amount of track clean up necessary. Fortunately, the top four drivers were able to avoid the carnage.
For the restart, Riedner chose the inside with Deschaine going outside with Stark and Malouf in the second row. Riedner was able to continue his leading ways with Stark up to second with three laps to go. Deschaine was able to get back to second with one lap to go, but Riedner was not to be denied as he raced his way to victory lane. Deschaine would finish second followed by English, Stark, and Malouf.
Mark English set fast time with a lap of 14.178 (63.479 mph). Heat races were won by Braun, Malouf, and Stark.
It’s Wire to Wire for Jarrod Sutherland
Sutherland held off Tucker Bodendorfer to capture his first-ever win on the Ring of Fire in the Hobby Stocks twenty lap main event.
Jamie Tate and Sutherland place the field to the green flag in their 20 lap feature. Sutherland quickly jumped out to the early lead followed by Scott Riedner. The two separated themselves from the field until Riedner slowed on the backstretch bringing out the caution flag on lap 6. Sutherland continued to lead when the green flag waved followed by Tate and Tucker Bodendorfer. At the half-way point, Sutherland had an eight car length lead over Bodendorfer while Tate and Charles Vian battled it out for third.
Out front Bodendorfer was closing the gap with each lap and with five laps to go the advantage for Sutherland was down to two lengths. On lap 17 Bodendorfer was on Sutherland’s rear bumper, but would come no closer as Sutherland edged him at the stripe to pick up the win.
Bodendorfer was fast qualifier with a trip of 14.067 (63.980 mph). Heat races were won by Jake Biever and Jessica Breunig. The Hobby Stock drivers all received bonus money compliments of Tim’s Detailing.
Nick Schmidt Holds Off Jeremy Bredeson for Bandits Win
Two familiar faces to the Ring of Fire, Nick Schmidt and Jeremy Bredeson, battled it out for the checkered flag with Schmidt getting the win by 0.270 seconds. Schmidt’s win was the 24th in his Bandit career at Madison tying him with Chester Ace for the all-time lead.
It was an interesting race to say the least. Not so much for the action on the track, but for what was happening over the track as the backstretch lights and scoreboard lost power plunging the Ring of Fire into a partial ring of darkness. But the drivers determined the lighting was good enough to complete the race.
The twenty-two car field came to the green flag led by Jordan Goecks and Landon Perry. It didn’t take long for the caution flag to wave after a spin in turn 3 on the second lap. Goecks showed the way back to the green flag followed by Charles Schork and Robbie Treinen. On the move was Tom Schuette who was up to third and took second and eventually the lead. But also charging through the field were Nick Schmidt and Jeremy Bredeson. Schmidt would eventually grab the lead followed by Chris Gottschalk and Bredeson. Bredeson would take the second position and try to hunt down Schmidt, but Schmidt was focused on victory lane and that’s exactly where he would take the 09 car.
Setting fast time in qualifying was Davey Pennel with a lap of 15.004 (59.984 mph). Winning heat races were Jordan Lamb, Nick Newton, and Steve Dickson.
Brandon DeLacy Cruises to Area Sportsman Victory
DeLacy won his first-ever Area Sportsman race on the Ring of Fire and received bonus money from Rece Electric, LLC as well making it a profitable night for him.
Brandon DeLacy jumped out to the early lead and quickly sailed away from the field. Paul Johnson Jr. and Scott Lawver were able to keep pace and close the gap, but would be unable to catch DeLacy who easily picked up the win in the Area Sportsman.
Paul Johnson Jr. was quickest in qualifying with a lap of 13.925 (64.632 mph) and also won the heat race.
Ben Massman won the fifteen lap feature for the Legends Direct Legends.
Ben Massman was another first-time winner on the Ring of Fire after picking up the victory in the Legends Direct Legends feature event.
James Bell and Spencer Polacek led the field to the green flag in the fifteen lap field. The caution flag came out after the first lap when two cars made contact in turn one. All cars involved were able to continue. Bell brought the field back to the green flag with Ben Massman and Jacob Stark side by side for third. Massman moved up to second and then powered his way to the outside of Bell to take the lead on lap 3. Massman wasted no time putting some real estate between himself and the second place car of Bell and was quickly checking away from the field until a spin on lap 9 brought out the second caution flag of the race.
Massman paced the field back to green with Bell in second followed by Eric Blumer and Lincoln Cain. On lap 10 Cain took the third spot and one lap later took second from Bell and started to hunt down Massman. But despite his best efforts, there just wasn’t going to be enough time as Massman picked up the win. Cain, Bell, Blumer, and Jacob Stark rounded out the top five.
Ryan Laatsch set fast time with a lap of 14.062 (64.002 mph). Jacob Stark and Ben Massman won the eight lap heat races.
Axel Oldenfoff Best of the Bandoleros
Oldenhoff won his first career feature race at Madison topping the eleven car field of Bandoleros.
Ransom Tate and Emily Billings had the honors of bringing the Bandoleros field to the green flag. Billings took the early lead before a spin brought out the caution flag after one lap. She led the field back to the green flag and battled out front with Axel Oldenhoff for the lead before a stalled car on lap 3 brought out the second caution flag of the race. Billings continued to lead after the restart, but Axel Oldenhoff was able to pull to the inside of Billings to take the lead before another caution flag came out for a stalled vehicle. Oldenhoff maintained his lead over Billings when the green flag waved again. On lap 7 Wesley Baumeister moved up to the second position ahead of Billings. A spin in turn four caused another caution flag with three laps to go. Oldenhoff would lead the rest of the way to pick up the win followed by Baumeister, Stein, Ransom Tate, and Blake Michael.
Axel Oldenhoff was quick qualifier with a lap of 14.584 (61.711 mph). Six lap heat races were won by Blake Michael and Ace Oldenhoff. All of the Bandoleros received bonus money from Tim’s Detailing.
6Shooter Checkered Flag Goes to Ken Morris
Ken Morris captured the flag in the main event for the Roto Rooter 6Shooters by beating a stellar field of competitors, storms, and darkness.
Richard Nelson and Morris brought the large field of Roto Rooter 6Shooters to the green flag. Morris took the early lead with Nelson trying to hold off Dan Bishop for second. Jake Hillery took the third spot on lap 5. Morris was checking away from the field and catching up to lapped traffic quickly. Thanks to his sizeable advantage over the field, Morris was content following the lapped traffic as he was able to keep the rest of the field at bay and take home the win. Bishop, Ozzie Osborne, Trevor Chilson, and Mike Pickerson completed the top five.
Heat races were won by Ozzie Osborne, Ken Morris, and Jeremy Bingham.
It’s Season Championship Night next Friday, August 18th with action in the the Late Models, Dave’s White Rock MISfitz, Roto Rooter 6Shooters, and the HSRA.
