Seven Different Feature Winners and Four Track Champions at Madison Tonight

Story Image

Four track champions were crowned at Madison tonight as part of Fink’s Paving Season Championship Night. Shaun Scheel won his first Madison track championship in the Late Model division while Dan Snyder (MISfitz), Dylan Klinger (6Shooters), and Kennedy Krueger (HSRA) successfully defended their championships.  Blake Nottestad (Late Models), Kyle Wahlgren (MISfitz), and Noah Karr (6Shooters) were Rookie of the Year winners.

Seven different winners took home checkered flags tonight.  Zack Riddle and Jake Gille (Late Models), Rick Coppernoll and Dave Edwards (MISfitz), Klinger and Elliott Hawkins (6Shooters) were winners while Krueger doubled up in the HSRA.

Fans were also treated to a spectacular aerial and ground fireworks display thanks to Skyline Fireworks of Onalaska, Wisconsin.

Zack Riddle and Jake Gille Big Winners in Late Models

Riddle won the first 30 lap Late Model feature.  It was his second win of the season and 41st in his Late Model career at Madison. Gille picked up the win in the second feature.

Blake Nottestad and Brady Liddle brought the field to the green flag with Liddle jumping out to the early lead.  With the field behind him still side by side, Liddle was able to open a five car length lead. On lap 3 Carson Phillips moved into second followed by Carter Nilson and Zack Riddle.

Disaster nearly struck for the two point leaders (Shaun Scheel and Brent Edmunds) on lap five when a pair of cars got together just ahead of them bringing out the caution.  Both drivers were able to avoid the incident.

Liddle led the field back to green as the top four broke away from the pack.  Carson Phillips took the lead one lap later with Nilson moving into second and Riddle third.  On lap 10 Stephen Scheel broke into the top five.  Two laps later Riddle powered his way past Nilson for second and quickly started to close in on Phillips.

On lap 14 fluid on the track brought out the caution flag and a lengthy clean up.

Phillips continued to lead after the waving of the green flag and opened up a three car length lead over Riddle with Nilson, Stephen Scheel and Jake Gille completing the top five. Another caution flag came out on lap 19 when two cars got together resulting in Gille and Will Rece going to the back of the pack.

For the restart, Phillips and Riddle lined up in the front row followed by Nilson and Stephen Scheel. Riddle was able to take the lead away from Phillips and built up a two length lead. On lap 20 the caution flag came out once again which resulted in Stephen Scheel and Nilson going to the back.

Riddle chose the inside with Phillips on the outside for the restart with Bobby Wilberg and Edmunds behind them in the second row.  Riddle continued his leading ways with Phillips and Edmunds fighting it out for second.  This allowed Riddle to step away from his fellow competitors and increase his lead to ten car lengths.

Riddle led the rest of the way followed by Phillips, Edmunds, Landry Potter, and Shaun Scheel.

Jake Gille won the second 30 lap feature taking home his first victory at Madison.

In the second race Cole Gray and Brody Beyer came to the green flag first.  Gray led the first lap with Blake Nottestad in second who would take the lead on lap 2.  On lap 3 Stephen Scheel and Jake Gille raced up to second and third before the caution flag came out for a spin on lap 4.

Nottestad launched the field back to green followed by Stephen Scheel, Gille, Brady Liddle and Shaun Scheel. On lap 7 Gille moved into second as Stephen Scheel and Liddle were now side by side for third.   Liddle took third on lap 9 with Bobby Wilberg taking the third spot two laps later.  This allowed Nottestad to increase his lead to nearly ten car lengths over Gille and the rest of the field.

With eight laps to go Gille was quickly cutting into Nottestad’s lead which was now down to two lengths. On lap 24 Gille powered his way to the inside of Nottestad coming out of turn two to take the lead.  He wasted no time building a lead over Nottestad who had his hands full with Wilberg.  Brent Edmunds passed Riddle for fourth with two laps to go.

Gille continued his strong run all the way to victory lane and picked up his first checkered flag of the season. Nottestad finished second followed by Wilberg, Edmunds, and Riddle. However, Nottestad failed post-race inspection for the second feature which moved Liddle into the top five.

Edmunds set fast time with a trip of 18.913 (95.173 mph).

Shaun Scheel became only the fifth driver to win a track championship in the Late Model division since 2006 edging Brent Edmunds by just twenty-two points (993-971).  Zack Riddle, Jake Gille, and Carson Phillips completed the top five.

Rick Coppernoll and Dave Edwards Capture Wins in MISfitz

Rick Coppernoll, the winningest driver in MISfitz history with thirteen wins, picked up his fourth  of the season in the first feature while Dave Edwards took top honors in the second event.  It was his first win of the season and eighth for his career at Madison.

The fourteen car field was led to the green flag by Tim Wondrash and Rick Coppernoll.  Coppernoll took the early lead with Kenny Storkson getting by Wondrash for second place. On lap 3 Dave Edwards moved into third followed closely by Dan Snyder.  On lap 6 Storkson was challenging for the lead before the caution waved for a car with mechanical issues.

Coppernoll brought the field back to green.  Once again as Storkson was going for the lead the caution flag came out again for a spin behind the leaders. Time to try it again. The top four broke away with Storkson looking to the inside of Coppernoll followed closely by Edwards. At the half-way mark Coppernoll and Storkson were side by side followed by Edwards and Snyder.

The two took turns with the lead but never for long until the final lap when Coppernoll was able to stay out front and take the checkered flag by 0.133 seconds. Finishing behind the top two were Snyder, Edwards, and Wondrash.

Jim Taylor and Wondrash showed the way to the green flag in the second feature. Taylor led the first five laps before a multi-car spin behind the leader brought out the caution.

Taylor maintained his lead with Snyder closing fast and on lap 7 went to the outside and took the lead coming out of turn four.  Dave Edwards moved into second followed by Coppernoll on lap 8 with the caution flag coming out one lap later for a car in the wall in turn four.

Snyder and Edwards quickly broke away from the field with Edwards on the inside and Snyder running the high side.  On lap 12 Edwards took the lead and quickly increased it to six car lengths and continued that advantage all the way to victory lane followed by Snyder, Nick Schneider, Kenny Storkson, and Coppernoll.

For the first time in his career at Madison, Kyle Wahlgren set fast time with a lap of 19.973 (90.122 mph)

Snyder defended his track championship with 1052 points followed by Coppernoll, Storkson, Wahlgren, and Wondrash.  Wahlgren also won Rookie of the Year honors.

Jacob Mathison and Elliott Hawkins Go to Victory Lane

Mathison jumped out to the early lead and never looked back to win the first 18 lap feature for the Roto Rooter 6Shooters.  In the second feature, Hawkins took the early lead and kept it the rest of the way to win his first feature of the season.

Mathison and Ozzie Osborne paced the nineteen car field to the green flag with Mathison vaulting out to the early lead.  He quickly increased his lead to five lengths while Osborne and Klinger were battling for second.  Osborne held on to the second place position while Klinger and Nolan McNallie were side by side for third.

But Klinger was able to adeptly work through traffic as he has done all year and moved up to second with seven laps to go. But he wasn’t able to close the gap on Mathison led wire to wire to pick up his second win of the season.  Finishing behind the top two were Osborne, Gene Robbins, and McNallie.

In the second feature, Jon Graham and Noah Karr had the honors of bringing the eighteen far field to the green flag.  Hawkins took the lead on the second lap with Kenny Morris and Christopher Webb up to second and third.

On lap 7 the caution flag came out for a car onto the infield wall in turn four just as Klinger had raced his way up to third. Hawkins was able to keep the lead followed by Morris, Webb, Klinger, and Jason Van Hise. With two laps to go Klinger moved into third and on the final lap took the second spot while Hawkins had smooth sailing out front and showed the way to victory lane. Following Hawkins and Klinger in the top five were Kenny Morris, Christopher Webb, and Van Hise.

Klinger was able to successfully defend his track championship holding off Van Hise (800-774).  Rounding out the top five in points were Mathison, Randy Grancorvitz, and Osborne.

Kennedy Krueger Goes Two for Two

Krueger won both 15 lap features and the 2025 track championship for the Finishline Towing HSRA.  He has five wins for the season and eight in his career at Madison.

Colin McKeown and Kennedy Krueger raced side by side for the first lap before Krueger took the top spot on lap 2.  He increased his lead to nearly ten lengths after five laps with McKeown and Jakob Koppers fighting it out for second.  On lap 9 Koppers took the second spot and tried to distance himself from McKeown but the McFarland driver wasn’t going to let him go.   Koppers hung on for second but nobody could catch Krueger tonight as he rolled to victory.

In the second feature Krueger and Koppers started in the front row and Krueger jumped out to the lead, but Koppers wasn’t going to let him get away. But once again Krueger was just two strong and picked up the win in the 15 lap main event.  Kopper finished second followed by Koppers.

Krueger easily won the points championship followed by Koppers and McKeown.

The ARCA Menards Series is here next Friday night for the running of the Badger 200.  The All Star Late Models will be here too with their feature set for 6:00 PM.
