Five Other Drivers Take Home Checkered Flags

It was a great night of racing at Madison and when it was all said and done seven different drivers went home with wins. Zack Riddle and Ryan Goldade (Late Models), Nick Schneider and Mason Hellenbrand (Dave’s White Rock MISfitz), Gene Robbins and Trevor Chilson (Roto Rooter 6Shooters), and Nick Schmidt (Bandits) all picked up wins.

Ryan Goldade and Zack Riddle Best of the Late Models at Madison

Ryan Goldade and Zack Riddle each won a 30 lap feature for the Late Models.

Goldade powered his way to victory in the first feature.

The field was brought to the green flag by Jesse Bernhagen and Jake Gille. Bernhagen and Landry Potter were able to break away from the pack while cars were two and three wide behind them. Unfortunately for Potter, a spin coming out of turn two on lap 5 brought out the caution flag.

Bernhagen led the field back to the green flag followed by Gille, Ryan Goldade, Zack Riddle, and Will Rece. On lap 8 Goldade moved into second just before the caution flag waved on lap 8 for fluids on the track creating a lengthy delay.

Bernhagen was under pressure from Goldade on the restart with the latter taking the lead on lap 9. On lap 11 Gille worked his way inside of Bernhagen in the battle for second followed closely by Riddle. This allowed Goldade to build a big advantage at the half-way point. On lap 16 Gille and Riddle passed Bernhagen with Riddle getting second on lap 17. The last thing Goldade wanted to see at this point occurred on lap 18 when a spin brought out the caution flag.

The double file restart would see Goldade on the inside with Gille on the outside followed by Riddle and Bernhagen. Goldade continued to lead with Riddle up to second with ten laps to go and Shaun Scheel up to third. Riddle was closing quickly on the leader. With five laps to go, Riddle was waiting for his opportunity to strike. But Goldade was not about to give up the top spot and led the rest of the way to the checkered flag. Jeremy Miller, Scheel, and Gille rounded out the top five.

For the third time in four starts, Zack Riddle picked up the win in the second 30 lap feature. He now has thirty-six career feature wins in the Late Models.

The second feature found Landry Potter and Colton Morgan on the front row. Potter grabbed the early lead with Will Rece quickly up to second who on lap 3 worked to the inside of Potter to take the lead. Bobby Wilberg moved into second on lap 4 followed by Shaun Scheel and Zack Riddle. A frontstretch spin on lap 6 brought out the caution. Rece was able to maintain his lead over Wilberg following the restart. On lap 8 Riddle passed Scheel for the third spot while action was heating up for fifth.

The top three of Rece, Wilberg, and Riddle were pulling away from the field with Riddle taking the second position on lap 11 and started to go to work on Rece. On lap 16 Riddle took the lead coming out of turn two with Wilberg also getting by Rece. Scheel took third on lap 20 while out front Riddle had a six car length lead over Wilberg. Riddle was able to work his way through lapped traffic while keeping his distance from Wilberg. Scheel would catch Wilberg for second with a lap to go, but nobody would catch Riddle who rolled into victory lane. Scheel, Wilberg Rece, and Goldade rounded out the top five.

“It’s a family deal,” said Riddle who graciously thanked his team and supporters.

Jeremy Miller was quick qualifier with a lap of 18.743 (96.036 mph).

Nick Schneider and Mason Hellenbrand Winners in the MISfitz

Although things didn’t go as planned on opening night, tonight was different as Nick Schneider won his first-ever race at Madison by winning the first 20 lap feature.

Mike Taylor and Rick Coppernoll brought the field to the green flag with Coppernoll taking the lead on the second lap. A backstretch incident on lap 4 brought out the caution flag sending the damaged cars of Mike Taylor and Chris Wangrow to the pits. Following the restart, Schneider would take his first lead before Dan Snyder took the top spot. But Schneider fought back and regained the lead on lap 7 and held off the field until five laps to go when he was under heavy pressure from Mason Hellenbrand. With four laps to go, Hellenbrand became the new leader but would “break out” giving the lead and eventual win to Schneider.

“This team is rocking and rolling,” said Schneider from victory lane.

Mason Hellenbrand won the second 20 lap feature for the MISfitz.

Hellenbrand led the field to the green flag in the second feature. On the second lap Rick Coppernoll took the lead from Hellenbrand with Edwards and Schneider in third and fourth. At the half-way point the pair were still racing side by side followed by Schneider and Edwards who were also two by two. On lap 14 Coppernoll got loose allowing Hellenbrand to take the lead followed by Schneider and Edwards. On the final lap, Schneider gave it his best shot but Hellenbrand was not going to be denied his trip to victory lane.

“We’re having a good time out here,” said Hellenbrand.

Fast qualifier was Dave Edwards with a trip of 20.157 (89.299 mph)

Gene Robbins and Trevor Chilson Top the 6Shooters

Four races and four different winners so far in 2024 for the Roto Rooter 6Shooters.

Gene Robbins took home the checkered flag in the first 18 lap feature.

Jacob Beard and Gene Robbins brought the field to the green flag. Robbins jumped out to the early lead before the first caution flag came out on lap 2. Robbins continued to lead followed by Charlie Schrock, Beard, and Kenny Morris. Jason Van Hise moved into second with eight laps to go and with five laps to go lapped traffic was definitely going to play a role. With three laps to go Van Hise was able to get to the outside to take the lead and hold off Robbins at the stripe to pick up the win. However, following post-race inspection, Robbins was declared the winner.

Trevor Chilson won the second feature for the 6Shooters.

Gregorio Jimenez started on the pole with Nolan McNallie getting the lead on the second lap with Josh Morris grabbing second followed by Trevor Chilson. After a caution, McNallie continued to lead followed by Chilson, Morris, and Dylan Klinger. On lap 7 Chilson made his move on the outside to get the lead with Klinger racing into second. Chilson and Klinger started working their way through lapped traffic and were successful with Josh Morris doing everything he could to catch them. Chilson and Klinger were side by side with two laps to go and continued that way until the final lap when Chilson inched forward to pick up the win.

“That was a lot of fun. We were able to hold off Klinger,” said Chilson.

Nick Schmidt Gets a Clean Sweep

Nick Schmidt became the winningest Bandit driver in Madison history by sweeping both features and getting his 25th and 26th wins on the Ring of Fire.

In the first feature, Jordan Goecks took the early lead before Davey Pennel vaulted to the lead on the second lap with Nick Schmidt taking the point on lap 5. From there it was all Schmidt who built up a big lead over Pennel with Nick Newton a distant third and Adam Moore in fourth. Lapped traffic did not slow Schmidt down who was able to increase his lead. Schmidt easily won followed by Pennel, Moore, and Newton.

Schmidt made it a clean sweep by winning the second 20 lap feature.

Ryan Oetzel took the early lead before Adam Moore took the lead on lap 2. Moore opened up a multi-car advantage followed by Nick Newton and Shawn Bowar. Nick Schmidt was up to fourth on lap 4 and began running the outside line taking third from Bowar setting his sights on Newton. At the half-way point Schmidt was second and was closing ground on Moore. The two ran side by side for the final eight laps with Moore leading going into the final turn when Schmidt crossed over and got inside Moore and picked up the win resulting in one of the most exciting finishes in Bandit racing history at Madison.

Schmidt was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 14.985 (60.060 mph).
