Gardner Jr., Cain, and Billings Also Winners
(Oregon, WI) Randy Sargent took home top honors in the 48 lap race for the Big 8 Late Models while Scott Gardner Jr.(Mid Am Racing Series), Lincoln Cain (Legends), and Emily Billings (Bandoleros) were also winners. For three of the four drivers it was their first ever Madison win.
Sargent Shows the Way in Big 8 Battle
Randy Sargent of South Beloit, Illinois, passed Jake Gille on lap 27 and led the rest of the way to earn the victory in the 48 lap feature for the Big 8 Late Models.
The field came to the green flag led by Josh Lundy and Jayden Johnson. After the two raced side by side for the first two laps, Johnson was able to take the point. Jake Gille moved into second with Randy Sargent, Jerry Mueller, and Carson Phillips chasing the top two.
On lap 9 Johnson drifted up the track coming out of turn two allowing Gille to take the lead with Sargent up to second on the following lap. As the laps ticked away, the field began to spread out around the track until the caution flag waved for a spin on lap 16.
Gille lined up out front with Sargent and Mueller in the second row while Johnson and Bobby Wilberg comprised row three. Gille got a great restart with Sargent taking second and Mueller in third while Wilberg passed Johnson for fourth. On lap 18 Dale Nottestad moved into fifth with the caution flag coming out shortly after for a backstretch spin.
Once again Gille would lead the field back to green followed by Sargent and Wilberg then Mueller and Nottestad. The result was the same for Gille while Sargent held on to second with Mueller, Wilberg, and Zack Riddle fighting it out for third. Mueller would win the battle for third with Riddle up to fourth ahead of Wilberg.
Gille and Sargent were checking away from the field when Sargent went to the inside coming out of turn three to take the lead on lap 27 while Mueller was holding off Riddle for the third spot. On lap 31 Riddle was finally able to clear Mueller but he was a full straight away behind the top two.
With ten laps to go Sargent was turning the fastest laps on the track and building up his lead over Gille and the rest of the field. Only a caution flag could slow him down, but it never waved as Sargent cruised to victory lane. Gille took home second followed by Riddle, Nottestad, and Wilberg.
“We’ve had some really fast cars here in the past and tonight it was good enough overcome any mistakes,” said Sargent who picked up his first win at Madison.
Zack Riddle was fast qualifier with a lap of 18.683 (96.344 mph). Eight lap heat races were won by Randy Sargent and Grant Brown.
Scott Gardner Jr. Captures Mid Am Checkered Flag
Scott Gardner Jr. took the lead when he went to the outside to pass Bill Prietzel with three laps to go to win the 30 lap feature for the Mid Am Racing Series. The Dyer, Indiana, driver made the 2.5 hour trip to Madison and went home with his first-ever win here.
RJ Tackman and Shane Sapp led the field to the green flag. Tackman took the early lead with Kyle Brick up to second with Bobby Gash III in third. By the fifth lap the top three had broken away from the pack with Cody Clubb and Bill Prietzel in fourth and fifth. Josh Nelms broke into the top five on lap 6 as Prietzel joined the top three at the front of the field.
On lap 11 Prietzel moved past Gash III for the third spot with Nelms taking fourth a lap later. Scott Gardner Jr. joined the top five on lap 14. Brick tried to move past Tackman for the lead on lap 15 as the two touched allowing Prietzel to take the lead with Tackman able to hold on to second. Prietzel wasted no time increasing his lead to ten cars while Nelms and Gardner Jr. were both able to pass Tackman.
A good battle for second was taking place between Nelms and Gardner Jr. as both were starting to catch Prietzel. Prietzel continued to lead and was hoping the race stayed green, but a spinning car with five laps to go brought out the yellow flag.
Prietzel brought the field back to the green single file style followed by Nelms, Gardner Jr., and Tackman. Prietzel continued to lead while Gardner Jr. went to the high side and took the lead with three laps to go. From there he was able to increase his lead to four car lengths and roll to victory lane followed by Prietzel and Nelms.
“These guys race with a lot of respect and there’s great drivers out here,” said Gardner Jr.
Fast time was set by Daniel Calhoun with a trip of 19.582 (91.921 mph). The eight lap heat race winners were Greg Thorson, Ron Vandermeir Jr., and Kyle Brick.
Lincoln Cain Holds Off Dillon Schwanbeck for Legends Win
Lincoln Cain of Slinger took home the win in the 20 lap feature for the Midwest Asphalt Legends Series. It was his second feature win in a row at Madison after winning last August.
Tyler Edmundson and Alex Kniewel paced the field to the green flag. Edmundson quickly jumped out to the lead before surrendering the top spot to Jacob Stark on lap 2. Eric Niemi and Dillon Schwanbeck moved up to second and third just before the caution flag waved on lap 3. Stark brought the field back to green with Eric Niemi sliding by to take the lead with Lincoln Cain and Schwanbeck battling for second. On lap 6 Cain sprinted by Niemi to take lead with a stalled car bringing out the second caution one lap later.
Cain continued to lead after the green flag waved with Schwanbeck a close second and Stark in third. On lap 11 Schwanbeck snuck his way past Cain to take the lead as two distanced themselves from the rest of the field. With four laps to go Cain retook the lead from Schwanbeck and held him off the rest of the way. Stark finished in third followed by Ryan Laatsch and Niemi.
“It’s awesome to win here at Madison. I love this track,” said Cain from victory lane.
Ryan Laatsch set quick time with a lap of 13.716 (65.617 mph). Eight lap heat winners were Marianna Kubicz and Dillon Schwanbeck.
Emily Billings is the Best of the Bandoleros
Emily Billings of Waterloo held off a great field of Bandoleros and picked up the win in the 15 lap feature. It was her first ever win at Madison
Jase Riedner outraced Blake Michael to take the early lead. On the second lap Billings sprinted past Michael for second and wasted no time reeling in Riedner for the lead. She quickly built up a big lead with Axel Oldenhoff taking second and brother Ace in third.
On lap 8 Axel Oldenhoff was closing in on Billings with the caution flag coming out a lap later for a spin in turn one. The cone came out for the restart with Billings electing to line up on the inside with Axel Oldenhoff on the outside followed by Ace Oldenhoff and Lincoln Johnson in the second row. Billings jumped back out to the lead with Axel Oldenhoff and Harley Johnson running second and third.
Billings maintained her lead the rest of the way and was able to hold off Lincoln Johnson for the win. “It means so much for me to win where my grandpa won,” said Billings in a post race interview.
Fast qualifier was Ace Oldenhoff with a lap of 14.627 (61.530 mph). Jase Riedner and Emily Billings won the eight lap heat races.
