Oregon, WI- Madison International Speedway officials have been forced to cancel tonight’s (Friday August 24, 2018) Howie Lettow Classic. With grounds at MIS and around Dane County already at peak saturation levels, coupled with current rainfall and additional rainfall forecasted by all major weather services for tonight, officials felt it was in the best interest for the teams and fans, some driving upwards of five hours.
“I hate having to do this, especially this early. With the rain we have had, the rain that is currently falling and the additional rain that is supposed to fall tonight, it was a decision that had to be made.” Commented Speedway owner Gregg McKarns. “Obviously we would have preferred to get the races in tonight and honor Howie Lettow and his family.” With no feasible rain date, this event is not able to be rescheduled, that also played into the decision added a dejected McKarns. “One of the worst things we could have done was to get the teams here, complete qualifying and then not be able to run. When you look at the schedule here and at other tracks, there just wasn’t a date that would work.”
Roscoe, Illinois’ Austin Nason will be crowned the Super Late Model Triple Crown Champion, finishing three markers ahead of Casey Johnson, followed by Jason and Chris Weinkauf and Rich Bickle, Jr rounding out the top five. With the cancellation, much like in 2016, the Super Late Model Triple Crown will have its final leg cancelled due to weather.
Racing action will continue next Friday night, August 31 when K&N presents the Madtown Meltdown Speed Trials plus Double Features for the NASCAR Late Models, Dave’s White Rock Sportsman, Pellitteri Waste Systems Bandits and Hobby Stocks.
