Madison Remembers Evie Handeland

Evelyn (Evie) May Handeland passed away peacefully on January 17th, 2026 surrounded by family. She was born May 19, 1924 to Elmer and Sophie (Rindahl) Evenson in Stoughton, Wis. She attended first through eigth grades at rural Magelson School northeast of Stoughton. She graduated from Stoughton High School in 1942.

She married Carlyle Handeland, son of Jorgen and Thea (Ostad) Handeland May 26, 1942. They rented several farms west of Stoughton raising chickens, tobacco and dairying. Then they bought a farm west of Stoughton in 1948 raising chickens, pigs and dairy cows. She worked at Piggly Wiggly in Stoughton in the egg department and then as a checker, tended bar at several bars and retired from Meriter Hospital in Madison in October 2000 after 21 years there.

She also worked summers at the Madison International Speedway in Oregon, Wis. She was proud to have worked for six owners of the track.

Eveyln is survived by 2 daughters: Jean Handeland (Dave Rear) of Oregon, Wis and Lois Harmon of Taylorsville, Utah and 1 son Norman (Vicki) of Lodi. Also surviving is 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband’s parents, she was preceeded in death by her husband in 1982, her daughter Edythe and son Lloyd, brothers: Arlyn, Ernest, Omer and Stanley, sister Eldora and 2 infant grandchildren Scott and Randal.

Evelyn liked to garden, play bingo, and to go for drives – visiting friends and family. She made thousand of KrumKakes every year for friends and family and donated many to the Norwegian Dancers for their fundraisers. Most of all, she loved to go to races every chance she got!

The family would like to extend their gratitude to hospice for all their support in her final days.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, February 1st at the VFW at 200 Veterans Road, Stoughton, WI from 1:00 to 4:00.
