Madison Likely To Play Large Role In NASCAR National Point Battle

Story Image

Oregon, WI- They both scored feature victories last weekend at their home tracks, now a pair of Minnesota drivers will bring the show to ‘Wisconsin’s Fastest Half Mile’ as they chase the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I National Championship. Jacob Goede, the five time and defending Elko Speedway (MN) Champion won one of two features last week at Elko, where he again leads the point standings. Nick Panitzke, whom won here at MIS back in July, captured a checkered flag last Saturday night during double features at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway (WI) where he is the 2017 Champion. Panitzke finds himself just 5 points behind perennial LFS Champ and former NWAAS Champion Steve Carlson heading into the 50th annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend.

The duo sits third and fourth in the National Standings with Goede just eight markers back and Panitzke fourteen points behind Peyton Sellers. Phillips Morris, an East Coast rival of Sellers sits second just two points back. Both Morris and Sellers are former National Champions, Morris with five and Sellers with one. Goede and Panitzke have all intentions of bringing the title back to the Midwest for the first time since 2007, when Steve Carlson was crowned Champion.

With a full field of NASCAR Late Models expected Friday night at Madison International Speedway, both drivers are looking to maximize their points on the night. A driver’s best 18 races are used to determine the National Championship, with a field of 16 allowing for maximum points and bonus points being awarded for wins based on a driver’s starting position. Two bonus points are awarded for starting from fourth to eighth and four points being awarded for starting from ninth or worse. Both drivers are looking for a good showing Friday night at MIS to boost their points and knock a sub-par performance out of their eighteen races used in the National Standings. Likewise, Panitzke should be able to solidify his spot atop the NASCAR Wisconsin standings over the likes of Carlson and MIS point leader Bobby Wilberg. Goede currently leads the Minnesota standings, but will be unable to increase his lead in the MN points while racing in Wisconsin. The NASCAR National Points Season ends on Sunday September 15.
