Kyle Stark Shows the Way to Victory Lane at Madison

Riedner, Borntreger, Sauter, Kinsey, and Lockington Also Winners

Kyle Stark (Midwest Dash), Brandon Riedner (Hobby Stocks), Andrew Borntreger (Legends), Penn Sauter (Bandoleros), plus Ashton Kinsey and Brayden Lockington (HSRA) all took home checkered flags on Ring of Fire Cheese Curd Cup Night presented by Morrison’s Auto Parts. Riedner was the only repeat winner from last year’s event. It was a night that witnessed four first-time feature winners and three new track records set in the Midwest Dash, Hobby Stocks, and Bandoleros.

The McKarns family would like to thank Bill Morrison and Morrison’s Auto Parts for their sponsorship of the races and adding extra money for the winners.

Kyle Stark Wins Midwest Dash 30

Kyle Stark is no stranger to the Ring of Fire and has won his share of races. But tonight may have been one of his more impressive wins as he started eleventh and in only four laps he was able to take the lead and pick up the win in the 30 lap feature for the Midwest Dash Series.

Chris Jackson and Brandon Junget paced the seventeen car field to the green flag. Jackson jumped out to the early lead, but Kyle Stark was the man on the move as he quickly worked his way up to second from his eleventh starting position by the end of the third lap. On lap 4, Stark raced his way past Jackson to take the lead. Stark quickly built up a lead over Jackson with Phil Malouf, Scott Ciesielski, and Jeremy Bredeson running in the top five. Both Malouf and Ciesielski passed Jackson while Stark was working his way through lapped traffic. On lap 13, Mark English passed Jackson to take the fourth position. Out front, Stark was held up by lapped traffic which allowed Malouf to close the gap before the caution flag waved on lap 16 when two cars got together coming out of turn four.

The top three chose the inside for the restart which allowed Mark English to start outside the front row. Stark was able to continue to lead with Malouf and English battling it out for second which allowed Stark to increase his lead. A great race for fourth place was occurring between Ciesielski and Karter Stark. On lap 22 English was able to get second, but had a lot of ground to close on Stark.

But tonight it was all Kyle Stark who cruised to victory lane followed by English, Malouf, Karter Stark and Ciesielski.

“I wasn’t just going to sit around and stay in line,” said Stark from victory lane when asked about his charge to the front.

Karter Stark broke his own track record with a lap of 13.967 (64.438 mph). Brandon Junget, Phil Malouf, and Mark English won the heat races.

Brandon Riedner Best of the Hobby Stocks

Brandon Riedner won the 25 lap feature for the Best in Wisconsin Shop Hobby Stocks. Riedner also won the 2021 Cheese Curd Cup.

Tucker Bodendorfer and Jamie Tate paced the field to the green flag. Bodendorfer took the early lead but it didn’t last long as the caution flag flew on the second lap when he and Robby Robinson got together. Robinson was unable to continue while Bodendorfer was able to continue.

Jamie Tate brought the field back to the green followed by Nick Bruley. On lap 4, Brandon Riedner pulled alongside Bruley for second with Riedner moving into second on lap 5. On lap 6 Riedner passed Tate on the outside to take the lead. On lap 8 Bruley edged ahead of Tate to take second. Two laps later Tate took back the second spot only to give it up a few laps later to Charles Vian. Meanwhile, Brandon Riedner was building a big lead thanks to the heavy action behind him.

With five laps to go the lead was nearly half a lap for Brandon Riedner. The race stayed green the rest of the way and nobody could catch the leader who won by more than eight seconds. Vian, in his first visit to Madison, finished second followed by Bruley, Shane Radtke Jr. and Mike Krueger.

“This car is pretty quick,” said Riedner, who talked about how much he enjoys racing on the Ring of Fire.

A new track record was set in qualifying by Brandon Riedner with a lap of 14.085 (63.898 mph). Heat races were won by Shane Radtke Jr. and Scott Riedner.

Andrew Borntreger Wins Legends Direct Legends Feature

In his first appearance ever at Madison, Andrew Borntreger won the 25 lap feature for the Legends Direct Legends feature.

Parker Jones took the early lead, but Eric Blumer powered his way past him on the second lap. Ben Massman got around Jones for second on lap 3. The caution flag came out on lap 5 for a spin coming out of turn three. Blumer led the field back to the green followed by Massman. Massman was able to pull to the inside on lap 7 to take the lead. Debris on the track brought out the second caution of the race.

Massman continued to lead, but moving up in the pack was Kenny Storkson who took third on lap 9. Two laps later Storkson moved past Blumer to take the second position and focus his attention on Massman. With ten laps to go Storkson had closed the gap to two car lengths. On lap 17 Storkson worked to the inside of Massman and took the lead coming out of turn two to take the lead. The leaders successfully worked their way around lapped traffic with Storkson able to maintain a three car length lead. But disaster struck for Storkson on lap 23 when he spun coming out of turn two bringing out the caution and moving Massman back to the lead.

Massman lined up on the inside of the front row for the restart with Andrew Borntreger choosing the outside. Borntreger was able to take the lead off the restart and then hold off Massman at the stripe by 0.093 seconds to pick up the win.

“It was a lot of fun. I didn’t even realize it was the last lap,” said Borntreger.

Kenny Storkson set fast time with a lap of 14.006 (64.258 mph). Ben Massman and Storkson won the heat races.

Penn Sauter Holds Off Alex Hartwig for Bandoleros Win

Penn Sauter won the 15 lap feature for the Taylored Construction Bandoleros. It was his first-ever win at Madison for Sauter who became the third generation of the Sauter family to win a feature at Madison.

Bentley Thompson and Axel Oldenhoff led the field to the green flag, but it was Easton Riedner who would take the lead after a lap. On lap 2 the caution flag waved for a spin. Riedner led the field back to the green flag, but the field was unable to complete a lap when two cars made contact in turn two. All eyes were on the cars of Penn Sauter and Alex Hartwig who were up to fifth and sixth respectively after starting deep in the field.

Riedner got a great restart with Lincoln Cain up to second followed by Hartwig. On lap 4 Hartwig took second from Cain with Sauter doing the same one lap later. Sauter moved into second on lap 7 shortly before the caution flag waved for an incident in turn four.

Once again Riedner brought the group back to the green but had his hands full with Sauter and Hartwig behind him. Riedner was able lead for a lap before Sauer took the lead on lap 9 with Hartwig up to second. The top three had to work their way through lapped traffic with Sauter able to hold off Hartwig and Riedner. On the final lap, Hartwig gave it his best shot but couldn’t get by Sauter who took home the checkered flag by 0.183 seconds.

“It was hard coming up from the back,” said Sauter.

Lincoln Cain established a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 14.655 (61.412 mph). Markus Obermeyer, Easton Riedner, and Cohen Henze.

Ashton Kinsey and Brayden Lockington are HSRA Winners

In his first visit in 2022, Ashton Kinsey started in the back row and went on to win the fifteen lap feature for the HSRA.

Kennedy Krueger and Jackson Martindale brought the field to the green flag. Krueger took the early lead with Jacob Mathison taking over the top spot on lap 2. The caution flag came out on lap 3 when two cars got together going into turn one.

Mathison continued to lead when the race went green followed by Martindale, Mitchell Berg, and Ashton Kinsey. On lap 7 Kinsey took the third position from Berg and set his sights on Martindale. One lap later he passed Martindale and started to chase down Mathison. Kinsey was on the move as he caught Mathison with three laps to go. Lapped traffic ahead of the leaders made things interesting which allowed Kinsey to take the lead with one lap to go. Kinsey was able to hold off Mathison to pick up the win. Martindale, Berg, and Brayden Lockington rounded out the top five.

“I just kept looking for the openings,” said Kinsey, who was here representing Onalaska High School.

Brayden Lockington may have been the last car to arrive at the track, but he was the first car to finish in the second 15 lap HSRA feature and took home his first-ever feature win at Madison.

The field was brought to the green flag by Devin Lee and Joey Miller. The caution flag waved after one lap when several cars spun. Miller led the pack back to the green flag and led for a lap before Charlie Thompson pulled to the outside of Miller. The two got together which opened the door for Brayden Lockington who took the lead before the caution flag waved again for a multi-car incident. Lockington maintained his lead follow the restart with Lee, Berg, and Kinsey in pursuit. On lap 8 Berg slid to the inside of Lee and took second. Out front Lockington was building a huge lead while Berg and Kinsey were battling it out for second. Kinsey would win the fight for second, but it was all Lockington who picked up the checkered flag in his first visit to Madison.

“After Tomah canceled, we decided to come race at Madison,” said Lockington, who made a good choice in making the trek south.

Next Friday night is NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Championship Night with track champions being crowned in the Late Models, MISfitz, and Bandits. The 6Shooters will also be in action as all four divisions will be racing double features.
