It’s Under the Lights on Friday Nights at MIS in 2014

By John Wells

Exciting racing action returns to Friday nights in 2014 at Madison International Speedway.

“Everyone is pretty excited about the move back to Friday nights.  It’s been a tradition for many, many years and we need to get back to our roots,” said MIS General Manager Dave Grueneberg.

Adding to the excitement is the fact that the super late models will be returning to Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-Mile this season. Joining the super late models on the weekly racing program and competing on the half-mile will be the Midwest Trucks and Sportsman while the Legends and Bandits battle it out on the “Ring of Fire” quarter-mile.  When the super late models are not on the racing schedule the late models will take center stage.

“This is a track that was made for super late model racing so that’s the direction we are going,” added Grueneberg.  “We won’t be having the supers every week so we’re going to have the late models racing with us too.”

The weekly racing season opener is set for Friday, May 23rd and will continue until Season Championship Night on August 29th.  This season qualifying will begin at 6:30 PM with racing at 8:00 PM.

“We are moving back to an 8:00 PM start this season to accommodate drivers who will be traveling to race with us each week,” noted Grueneberg who pointed out that drivers from as many as four states will be racing weekly in 2014.

The Super Late Model Triple Crown Challenge returns this year and will be part of the Friday night racing program.  Feature races for the “Challenge” will be 100 laps.

When the super late models are off, Madison will be hosting a three race Late Model Challenge Series.  “There are some major super late model events being held in the Midwest that conflict with some of our Friday dates so this will allow us to bring in the late models. This will follow a similar format to the Triple Crown Challenge that we’ve run for the super late models.”  Rules for the series are still being finalized, but the goal is to make as many late models running in this region eligible to race.

Speaking of late models, the Big 8 Late Models will be at Madison on Friday, June 27th as part of Salute to America Night that includes the area’s biggest and best fireworks show.

Two major special events are also on tap at Madison.  The ARCA Midwest Tour will be here on Sunday, May 4th for the running of the Joe Shear Classic.  The ARCA Racing Series also returns to the speedway on Sunday, August 24th.

A tractor and truck pull is also planned for this season with the date and details still being finalized.
