Going into the night, the Late Models at Madison had five different winners in five races and fans were wondering if that streak would continue. A very competitive field of cars was on hand for the Fast Cars and Freedom 76 with Brent Edmunds picking up a clean sweep as he won both 38 lap Late Model features plus set fast time and took home over $3500 for his efforts. Edmunds, the first repeat winner, now has three for the season and five for his career at Madison.
Veteran driver Rick Coppernoll also won both feature races for the Dave’s White Rock MISfitz.
Following the racing action fans were treated to a spectacular fireworks display performed by Skyline Fireworks from Onalaska.
Two for Two for Edmunds
Starting seventh, Brent Edmunds took the lead on lap 25 and never looked back as he took home the checkered flag in the first 38 lap feature.
Brady Liddle and Shaun Scheel paced the twenty-six car field to the green flag. After a lap, Liddle had a slight lead over Scheel with Dale Nottestad in third followed by Jake Gille and Zack Riddle. On lap 3 Scheel took the lead with Nottestad racing up to second followed by Liddle, Gille, and Edmunds.
Nottestad found room inside of Scheel to take the lead on lap 9 and wasted no time opening up a five car length advantage. Riley Stenjem broke into the top five on lap 11 as the top five were putting some distance between themselves and the sixth place car of Casey Johnson by the half-way point of the race. On lap 21 a battle between Liddle, Edmunds, and Stenjem for third allowed Nottestad and Scheel to increase their lead.
Scheel was cutting into Nottestad’s lead on lap 23 before the caution flag waved for a backstretch spin thus setting up the first appearance of the restart cone.
For the restart Nottestad elected to line up on the inside with Scheel going to the outside. Liddle and Edmunds made up row two with Johnson and Stenjem in row three. Scheel took back the lead after a lap just before another spin brought out the second caution flag on lap 24.
This time Scheel chose the inside with Nottestad following him which allowed Edmunds to move up to the outside of the front row followed by Liddle. Scheel and Edmunds brought the field back to green with Edmunds jumping out to the front chased by Scheel, Nottestad, Liddle, and Stenjem.
Like a rocket, Edmunds was quickly able to open up a ten car length lead with ten laps to go. All the rest of the field could hope for was a caution flag to take away his lead, but it never waved as the driver from Brodhead, Wisconsin, cruised to victory lane. Scheel finished second ahead of Nottestad, Stenjem, and Johnson.
“We had some brake issues early on so when the caution came it allowed things to cool off,” said Edmunds from victory lane.
In the second 38 lap feature, Edmunds started tenth in the twenty five car field and took the lead on lap 29 and led the rest of the way enroute to his second win of the night.
Colton Morgan and Carson Phillips led the field to the green flag. Phillips held a slight advantage over Morgan after the first lap and built up a five car length lead before a spin in turn four brought out the caution flag.
The field was brought back to the green by Phillips who jumped out to a four car length lead over Morgan. On lap 7 the man on the move was Stephen Scheel jumped up to second ahead of Morgan with Gille, and Johnson in pursuit. On lap 9 Johson powered past Gille to take the fourth spot. One lap later Edmunds did the same and moved into fifth ahead of Gille. Johnson pulled inside Morgan to claim the third spot on lap 13. Edmunds pulled to the inside of Morgan on lap 14 to take fourth with Stenjem cracking the top five on lap 17.
Phillips was continuing his leading ways with an eight car length advantage over Stephen Scheel who had his hands full with Johnson. The caution flag came out on lap 24 for an incident in turn two involving a pair of cars. This negated the 1.3 second advantage Phillips had over Stephen Scheel and Johnson. Unfortunately for Johnson, his car had issues and he had to head to the pits and would not return.
Phillips chose to line up on the inside with Stephen Scheel on the outside of the first row with Stenjem and Edmunds in row two followed by Shaun Scheel and Morgan. Stephen Scheel took the lead from Phillips on the restart with Edmunds and Phillips side by side for second. On lap 27 Edmunds cleared Phillips for the second spot. On lap 28 Edmunds pulled even with Stephen Scheel before taking the lead on lap 29. Much like the first race, Edmunds quickly put some room between himself and the field and led the rest of the way followed at the line by Stephen Scheel, Phillips, Stenjem, and Shaun Scheel.
Brent Edmunds set fast time during qualifying with a lap of 18.683 (96.344 mph)
Rick Coppernoll Doubles Up in MISfitz
It was also a very successful night of racing for Rick Coppernoll in the Dave’s White Rock MISfitz as he won both 20 lap features. He now has three wins for the season and twelve for his career in the MISfitz.
In the first 20 lap feature the eleven car field was brought to the green flag by Brian Ulrich and Jim Taylor. Taylor took the lead for the first lap before Kenny Storkson powered by him on the second lap followed by Rick Coppernoll and Dan Snyder. Coppernoll took the top spot on lap 4 followed closely by Storkson and Snyder. A lapped car on lap 5 forced Storkson back to third behind Coppernoll and Snyder.
Storkson and Snyder raced side by side which allowed Coppernoll to open up a four car length lead at the half-way point. With seven laps to go Coppernoll’s lead was down to two car lengths over Storkson. Storkson continued to cut into the lead and with two laps to go the advantage was down to half a car length.
On the final lap Storkson pulled even with Coppernoll and appeared to get the win at the line, but coming down the final stretch he “broke out” allowing Coppernoll to get the victory. Snyder would be credited with second followed by Dave Edwards, Brandon Liddle, and Ulrich.
Coppernoll made it two for two by winning the second 20 lap feature.
Storkson and Tim Wondrash brought the field to the green flag for the second 20 lap main event. Storkson took the early lead from the inside with Wondrash running side by side and leading the second lap as the top two traded off the lead.
Wondrash increased his lead to three lengths over Coppernoll, Storkson, and Snyder. Coppernoll took the lead on lap 6 with Wondrash hanging on to second with Snyder and Storkson side by side for third.
Coppernoll continued to hold off the field with Wondrash and Snyder fighting it out for second. With three laps to go Snyder moved into second place with Edwards up to challenge Wondrash for third. Coppernoll continued to show the way and earned a trip to victory lane for the second time tonight. Snyder was second followed by Edwards, Wondrash, and Storkson.
Fast qualifier was Dave Edwards with a lap of 20.274 (88.784 mph)
