(MADISON, WISCONSIN) – Finally. Rookie Carson Brown can say ‘I finally won on the ASA STARS Tour National Tour” after winning on Friday night at Madison International Speedway in the El Bandido Yankee Tequila Capital 250 presented by Appalachian Sucker Punch 250.
Brown, the New London, North Carolina driver took the lead from Wausau, Wisconsin wheelman Luke Fenhaus on lap 158 and he never looked back and scored his first win of the season in his rookie campaign. Brown had led four other races this season, including two others where he led the most laps.
As Brown came across the line he was unchallenged by second-place finisher Cole Butcher who had a horrible night. The Porter’s Lake, Nova Scotia driver rebounded and used attrition to climb back into the top five again. Butcher maintained the point lead after a night where he was outside the top 10 in both stages.
Fellow rookie Ty Fredrickson finished third to be the lone driver from the Midwest in the top five.
The early complexion of the race saw Plover, Wisconsin driver Gabe Sommers and Seymour, Wisconsin, driver Ty Majeski sweep the front row in time trials. Majeski had won the last two races at Madison, but after only 13 laps he went pit side with mechanical issues.
That allowed Sommers to dominate the first half of the race and lead to the stage one break. After the break, Luke Fenhaus jumped to the point and pulled away to lead the charge to the second break.
Brown took the lead after the restart, but there was a scary moment on lap 201 when Fenhaus lost a left rear tire crippling his night and taking Derek Thorn, Gavan Boschele, Derek Kraus, and even Cole Butcher up the track to a grinding halt.
Pinellas Park, Florida’s Stephen Nasse overcame a poor starting spot and got laps to improve from 17th to finish fourth. Quincy, Washington driver Kasey Klelyn scored a fifth, his best career finish with the ASA STARS National Tour.
The series has a short time off as they will be back in action on Sunday at Slinger Super Speedway in Wisconsin.
