It was a night of double features at Madison with eight different drivers going home with checkered flags. Will Rece and Shaun Scheel (Late Models), Kevin Anderson and Brady Liddle (MISfitz), Dylan Klinger and Trevor Chilson (6Shooters) and Tim Lind and Tom Gille (UMVRS) all picking up wins.
The racing excitement was all part of Racers’ Reunion Night where the late Jim Back became the newest member of the MIS Hall of Fame.
Will Rece Races His Way to Victory Lane
Rece took home the checkered flag in the first 30 lap feature for the Late Models.
Jesse Berhagen and Jake Gille led the field of twenty-two cars to the green flag. Bernhagen jumped out to the early advantage with Stephen Scheel getting by Gille for second before a spin back in the pack brought out the first caution on lap 3.
The single file restart came back to the green flag paced by Bernhagen who was immediately challenged by Stephen Scheel. The pair raced side by side followed by Gille, Shaun Scheel, and Will Rece. On lap 8 Rece, who was running the outside moved into the fourth spot. On lap 9 Rece moved up two positions to take the second spot ahead of Stephen Scheel. Bernhagen, Rece, and Stephen Scheel broke away from the pack.
On lap 14 Rece was able to work his way by Bernhagen to take the lead and open up a three car length advantage. But lapped traffic was just ahead of the leaders. With ten laps to go it was Rece, Bernhagen, Stephen Scheel, Shaun Scheel with Bobby Wilberg and Zack Riddle fighting it out for fifth. Rece worked his way through the lapped traffic and opened up a double digit advantage over Bernhagen. It was smooth sailing for Rece until a spin coming out of turn two by a lapped car brought out the caution flag with two laps to go.
Now it was time for the cone. Rece chose the inside with Bernhagen the outside followed by Stephen Scheel and Shaun Scheel in the second row with Wilberg and Riddle in row three. Time for a two lap shootout.
Rece was able to get away from Bernhagen and open up a four car length advantage and cruise to victory lane. Bernhagen finished second followed by Shaun Scheel, Stephen Scheel, and Zack Riddle.
“It feels good to get this one tonight,” said Rece who picked up his second career win at Madison in the division.
Shaun Scheel Declared Winner in Second Feature
Even though Bobby Wilberg crossed the line first in the second thirty lap feature, Shaun Scheel wound up being declared the winner following post race technical inspection. For Scheel it was his second feature win of the season.
A pair of drivers making their first Madison appearances of the season, Franc Beldowski and Noah Eisenhower, paced the field to Tom White’s green flag. Jake Gille moved up to take the lead on the second lap closely followed by Wilberg. On lap 5 Stephen Scheel worked his way underneath Beldowski to take the third spot before an incident in turn four brought out the caution flag.
Gille brought the field back to the green flag followed by Wilberg, Stephen Scheel, Weston Marthaler, and Morgan Schissel. On lap 10 Shaun Scheel cracked the top five followed by Zack Riddle. Gille and Wilberg were breaking away from the pack. At the half-way point Schissel was putting pressure on Scheel for third. With ten laps to go the leaders had caught the tail end of the field and had to maneuver their way through traffic. Wilberg was slowed up by a lapped car which allowed Gille to increase his lead. But Wilberg battled his way back to challenge Gille but time was running out.
Gille’s lead was five lengths over Wilberg with five laps to go with Stephen Scheel in third while Schissel and Riddle were in an intense battle for third. But things change quickly in racing and a spin coming out of turn four brought out the caution flag with four laps to go and a double file restart on tap.
It was now Gille on the inside with Wilberg on the outside followed by the Scheel brothers in the second row with Riddle and Schissel in row three for the final two miles of the race. Wilberg captured a slight lead over Gille with Shaun Scheel a close third. A spin bringing out the caution flag sent the field back to the last completed lap setting up a green-white-checkered finish.
Wilberg lined up on the inside with Shaun Scheel taking the outside. Wilberg got a great start and jumped out to the lead with Schissel challenging Shaun Scheel for second which allowed Wilberg to put some distance between himself and his nearest challengers. Shaun Scheel, Schissel, Riddle and Gille completed the top five.
However, Wilberg’s car was later disqualified during post-race inspection which meant runner-up Shaun Scheel was declared the winner.
Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 18.762 (95.939 mph)
Kevin Anderson in Victory Lane at Madison
Anderson picked up his first-ever win at Madison by taking home the checkered flag in the first twenty lap feature for the Dave’s White Rock MISfitz.
The field for the first twenty lap feature was brought to the green flag by Tim Wondrash and Mike Taylor. A spin on the opening lap brought out the caution flag. Mike Taylor took the lead on the restart followed by Wondrash and Kevin Anderson. On lap 3 Anderson snuck by Taylor on the outside to take the lead with Brian Ulrich taking second from Taylor on lap 4.
Ulrich pulled to the outside of Anderson and the two raced side by side with Ulrich taking the lead on lap 7. But Anderson fought back and took turns trading the lead with Ulrich with Dave Edwards now a close third. With four laps to go, Anderson was able to wrestle the lead away from Ulrich with Dave Edwards joining the mix along with Dan Snyder. On the final lap it was Anderson holding off Edwards, who attempted to get by coming out of turn four, to pick up the win.
“It feels good to be in victory lane,” said Anderson.
Brady Liddle Goes Wire to Wire in the Second Feature
Liddle took home the second twenty lap feature for the Dave’s White Rock MISfitz. It was his first win in the division.
Liddle was the pole sitter for the second feature. Liddle vaulted out to the lead with Mike Taylor in second alongside Tim Wondrash. Kenny Storkson moved to the inside of Wondrash on lap 4. Dave Edwards moved past Storkson and took the third spot while Wondrash kept the second spot. On lap 7 Edwards got to the outside of Wondrash for second while out front Liddle was able to build a six car length lead.
At the half-way point Edwards had cut into Liddle’s lead which was now down to three lengths. Liddle continued to show the way with five laps to go, but Edwards had cut the advantage to a car length. With two laps to go, Edwards tried to put the nose of his modified inside of Liddle to take the lead, but he broke out for the second time moving up Wondrash to second. But in the end nobody could catch Liddle who led wire to wire. Wondrash and Storkson finished in the second and third positions.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been down in victory lane,” said Liddle, a former Late Model driver at Madison.
Fast time was set by Dave Edwards with a trip of 20.300 (88.670 mph)
Dylan Klinger is On a Roll in the 6Shooters
Klinger won the first fifteen lap feature for the Roto Rooter 6Shooters giving him three wins for the season and keeping him on top of the divisional point standings.
Todd Klinger and Captain Morgan brought the fourteen car field to the green flag. Morgan grabbed the early lead with Ken Morris pulling inside him to take the top spot on lap 2. Matt Crowell moved into second on lap 3 with Dylan Klinger up to third one lap later. Klinger powered his way past Crowell for second and turned his attention to Morris.
On lap 8 they were side by side with Morris on the inside and Klinger on the outside. On lap 10 Klinger was simply too quick for Morris as he took the lead and raced through lapped traffic all the way to victory lane. Morris finished second followed by Josh Morris, Jason Van Hise, and Matt Crowell.
“I just love this track,” said Klinger from victory lane.
Trevor Chilson Wins a Close One
Chilson led wire to wire holding off the field in the second fifteen lap feature for the 6Shooters.
In the second fifteen lap feature, Jason Morgan and Trevor Chilson comprised the front row. Chilson raced his way to the early lead followed by Nolan McNallie, Gene Robbins, Jason Van Hise, and Dylan Klinger.
Chilson opened up a sizeable lead over McNallie and the rest of the field. On lap 8 Van Hise moved into the second position ahead of McNallie and started to reel in the leader. Dylan Klinger took over third and started to chase down Van Hise for second. With a lap to go a pair of lapped cars slowed Chilson enough to allow Van Hise to gain some ground, but the news for the leader got worse as the caution flag came out for a spin meaning a green-white-checkered.
A single file restart put Chilson in control followed by Van Hise, Klinger, Robbins, and Johnson. Chilson maintained his lead with Van Hise trying to get by on the outside with Chilson holding off both Van Hise and Klinger at the stripe to pick up the win.
From victory lane, Chilson explained how his car was donated to him.
Tim Lind Sprints to UMVRS Win
Tim Lind of Waupun, Wisconsin, won the first 12 lap feature for the Upper Midwest Vintage Racing Series.
Chris Matz and Roger Peterson had the honors of bringing the Vintage cars to the green flag. Roger Frank jumped out quickly to the lead followed by Justin Jessop and Tommy Elsinger. On lap 2 Elsinger passed Jessop to take the second position and wasted no time catching the leader and passing him on the front stretch to take the point. Moving up fast was the car of Tim Lind who moved into the second spot on lap 6.
No stranger to Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-Mile, Steve Rubeck, was charging to the front and found himself in third on lap 9. But Lind was the fastest on the track as he passed Elsinger for the lead and raced his way to victory lane followed by Rubeck and Jessop.
Lind was driving a 1976 Chevy Nova that was a former dirt track car.
Tom Gille Powers His Way to Victory Lane
Gille, a long time Late Model driver, won the second 12 lap feature for the UMVRS.
Justin Jessop and Roger Peterson brought the pack of vintage cars to the green flag. Quickly up to join the top three was Tom Gille. Eric Melchior took the lead on the second lap followed by Gille and Jessop. Melchior and Gille pulled away from the field with Gille taking the lead on lap 5 with Rubeck a distant third.
Out front it was clear sailing for Gille as he was able to maneuver his way around lapped traffic while Rubeck was applying heavy pressure on Melchior for second and took that position with one lap to go. But he wasn’t going to have enough time to catch Gille who picked up the win by 2.5 car lengths.
Gille had issues in the first feature but did the work to get his John Knaus tribute car ready for the second feature.
Racing continues on Friday, July 26th with a 300 lap four cylinder enduro race on the Ring of Fire. Last year’s ISS Enduro event featured one of the closest finishes in track history and this year’s event will be just as exciting.
