Kevin Knuese Picks Up First Late Model Win at Madison

Story Image

It was a big night of racing at Madison International Speedway with Kevin Knuese (Club LaMark NASCAR Late Models), Robert Hansberry (Dave’s White Rock Sportsman), and Dave Edwards (Midwest Trucks) each notching feature wins tonight.

Knuese Rolls to Victory Lane

Kevin Knuese won the 30 lap feature for the Club LaMark NASCAR Late Models.

Knuese started on the pole alongside Zach Less who was making his first appearance at Madison. Less took the early lead after one lap before Knuese sprinted to the front. On lap 3 Brent Edmunds moved up to second followed by Wayne Freimund and Brady Liddle.

On lap 4 Bobby Wilberg moved into the top five and four laps later passed Liddle to take the fourth position. Freimund and fast qualifier Rusty Hansen got together on lap 9 bringing out the caution flag and ending the night for both drivers.

On the restart, Knuese and Edmunds chose to line up on the inside with Wilberg choosing the outside line. Knuese continued to lead followed by Edmunds. Liddle, Wilberg, and John Baumeister Jr. On lap 14 Baumeister passed Wilberg to take fourth just before the caution flag waved on lap 15 for a spin.

Once again the top four drivers chose the inside line with Wilberg electing to start on the outside. Knuese continued to lead with Edmunds in second and Wilberg in third. The top three were nose to tail and put some distance between themselves and the fourth place car of Liddle.

By lap 24 Knuese had built up a three car length lead with Edmunds and Wilberg fighting a spirited battle for second. But Knuese was not to be denied tonight as he led the rest of the way and cruised to victory lane. Edmunds finished in second just ahead of Wilberg with Liddle and Baumeister Jr. rounding out the top five.

“It was a long day. We were good enough to hang on since our brakes were starting to go,” said Knuese who performed double duty tonight in back to back events.

Rusty Hansen set fast time with a mark of 18.846 (95.511 mph). Zack Riddle won the six lap RA Heating and Air Conditioning Dash. Heat winners were Don Wickstrum, Kevin Knuese, and Tom Gille.

Hansberry Best in the Sportsman

Robert Hansberry won the 20 lap feature for the Dave’s White Rock Sportsman.

Gary Hellenbrand and Trevor Robinson led the field to the green flag with Hellenbrand taking the early lead. On lap 2 Johnny Robinson moved up to second and one lap later took the lead. On lap 4 Mike Taylor moved his way into second followed by Steve Anderson, Ryan Goldade and Robert Hansberry.

On lap 6 Anderson and Goldade made contact but the race stayed under green. This allowed Robinson to build up a huge lead with Hansberry and Taylor still in pursuit and a lot of ground between them and the fourth place car of Goldade.

With seven laps to go Robinson’s lead was down to just a second with Taylor a distant third. Hansberry was closing quickly and on lap 15 it was down to a car length lead for Robinson. On lap 17 Hansberry worked to the inside of Robinson and took the lead while coming out of turn three and never looked back at the rest of the field. Robinson finished in second and ran his best race of the season followed by Taylor, Goldade and Anderson.

“There are so many people I need to thank for making all of this possible,” said Hansberry.

For the fourth straight time Robert Hansberry was fastest in qualifying with a lap of 20.005 (89.978 mph). Ryan Goldade won the RA Heating and Air Conditioning Dash. Trevor Robinson and Steve Anderson were victorious in the heat races.

Edwards Cruises to Midwest Trucks Win

Dave Edwards won his first-ever feature at Madison by picking up the 30 lap victory in the Midwest Truck Series.

The field was brought to the green flag by Nick Egan and Jerry Wood with Egan taking a two truck length advantage over Wood after one lap. Michael Bachaus and Dave Edwards were racing side by side for third with Edwards grabbing the advantage on lap 6. The top four along with Todd Schmitz started to check away with the field with Chester Ace closing fast.

On lap 9 Edwards tried to get to the inside of Wood but was unable to do so. On lap 10 Schmitz slid to the inside of Bachaus for fourth. On lap 13 Ace worked by Bachaus to crack the top five while Edwards and Wood were running side by side for second. Two laps later Ace and Bachaus tangled with each other bringing out the caution flag and sending Ace to the tail of the field.

After the restart Edwards powered his way past Egan to take the lead with Bachaus following closely in third just ahead of Kevin Knuese. Edwards wasted no time getting out front and was quickly checking away from the field. Four laps later Knuese worked his way past Egan for third with Schmitz and Ace fighting it out for fifth. Egan was forced to pull off when his truck slowed.

The best race on the track was between Ace and Knuese with Ace getting winning the battle for the third spot. But this race belonged to Edwards who picked up the Midwest Trucks checkered flag. Michael Bachaus finished in second place ahead of Ace, Knuese, and Schmitz.

“The truck was really good. We just got out front and the truck really took off,” said a very excited Edwards from victory lane.

Chester Ace set fast time with a lap of 18.664 (96.442 mph). Heat race winners were Jerry Wood and Kevin Knuese.

Next Friday night at Madison, it’s the annual Salute to America Night featuring the area’s biggest and best fireworks display plus the Big 8 Late Models, Great Northern Sportsman Series, and Midwest Dash Series in action on Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-Mile. Pit gates open at 3:30, practice at 5:00, qualifying at 6:15 and racing at 7:30. For more information check out our website at misracing.com
